I am watching this at the moment and i really think this is worth seeing. It's a shorter series, so you don't have to watch 300 episodes first.

Great animation, tension build-up, story telling ...

I liked Overlord too so i guess i have a love for the little bit darker series. I accept humor as a part of the story, but it musn't get over the top like with Soul Eater.

Any more tips in the 'darker genre'? Akame ga Kill! and Death Note are on schedule as well but first let's finish Tokyo Ghoul.

Yeah this is a pretty good anime, I was hesitant to watch it at first but I really enjoyed it. Third Season is starting off next year, I'll probably wait for the dub though. For more darker series I'd reccomend Berserk, I'd go for the manga. If you really don't want to read the manga, then try the original anime or the movie trilogy. I'd still reccomend checking out the manga. Dark anime that are similar to Death Note I'd say would be Monster. It definitely has a lot of goosebump moments, it has about 84 episodes or something so in the middle it does tend to drag a bit. If you enjoy Death Note then I'd highly reccomend Code Geass to you, I wouldn't consider it dark but I would consider it a superior series. That's about all I can think of besides perhaps Hellsing.

Edit: One I forgot to add is Attack on Titan, fantastic series as well as fairly dark.

There definitely are a lot of good series. Thx for the suggestions. Attack on Titan: saw some short fragments and the animation looks very artfull.

It doesn't necessarily have to be really dark. Boku no Hero, Mob Pyscho 100, One Punch Man are all great. I am planning to start Bleach and/or Naruto for some years. The problem is: what do you watch? You need to be somehow selective, otherwise you're basically only watching anime in your free time. A man's got other obligations in life too.

If you like Tokyo Ghoul, please read its manga. The second half of the anime is an original route that separates itself from the manga and its nowhere near as good.

Just finished first season. The ending: both cruel and metaphoric.
