Crazy Awesome Legend

Is there a footballer who can undeniably be labelled as the greatest of all time?

Also, how do you decide what factors make someone the greatest? Goals scored? Trophies won? Examples of skill?

My guess would be that Lionel Messi is probably the overall no 1. Or perhaps Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima.

Four names right now: Pele, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Brazilian Ronaldo had too many injuries unfortunately, but he could've been one of the best as well.

All of the above. I think the cream of the crop will have a big enough resume that they can stand up no matter which criteria you lean towards. And when you do get to the top 5 players, it's really a matter of preference.

For me, Emmeth hit the nail on the head. Pele, Maradona, Messi, and Ronaldo are the top footballers of all time imo. You can make the argument for any of them being at the top of the list, but I don't think an argument can be made for anybody else to go ahead of them (Although there are names that aren't far behind (Cruyff and Zidane are the first two that come to mind).

However, we tend to gravitate more towards attacking players when thinking of the greatest players to play the game. Beckenbauer and Baresi were probably just as good in the defensive third as the above mentioned players were further up the field, but don't get as much respect. Ditto for goalkeepers.

As a final note, I think we're extremely lucky to have been witness to a period in time when two of the best footballers to ever grace the pitch are in their primes at the exact same time. At rival clubs, no less. We should savour these next few seasons.

"Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is."
