General education in college

Why does this exist still? What about the 12 years of grade school that was full of general education? Why am I forced to take these classes that require hours and hours of busy work and don't actually help me with my career path and just hate school? It doesn't make sense. It's expensive and time and energy wasting. I can't say I haven't gained anything from it but it's hard to see how other parts will really help me. So I wouldn't say it's totally pointless but I think it's definitely drawn out

What do you think of general education? Necessary or almost pointless?

I will agree that Philosophy seems like a waste of time for an engineering degree. But it helps in critical thinking I guess.

How about poetry for a computer science major?

^ Lmao. Physical Education in Law school. Felt like high school times again.

There can be adjacent classes that are related to the main ones to help you have a better understanding. Other than that, I don't know, like literature in Medicine school for example, is a complete waste of time indeed.

This doesn't happen in the UK. You just do your degree and that's it.

Wow, really? That kind of blows my mind really, seems like such a waste of time for everyone involved. I get the idea about improving critical thinking (though some of what was mentioned above does not seem to accomplish that) but that could surely be done in a more efficient manner.

Well that's the main reason US degree prices are so out of control. Everyone has come to accept that every degree comes with about 30 credit hours of "basics"
That's the equivalent of about a year and half of classes which is also somewhere in the range of 20-30k

It's so stupid that we have to go through this. I get to my programming class and I love being there and I'm willing to put myself through the work. I get to my US history class and I hate school again. It's expensive and pointless. I understand native Americans were the first Americans and they were treated like s*** but I've learned about this so many times

It's also crazy how many math classes I need to take for computer science but that's a little different

Yeah, it is absolutely pointless. It is literally the same thing as in high school. All that matters to the system is shoving in as much information as they can in your head and then regurgitating it back. It feels like nothing more than a way to increase your tuition. Need more money? Make the students take more classes. In the end, college is nothing more than high school. Maybe a little bit more complex in some areas, but it is high school.

But where as high school was, affordable...college is a filthy mess. It feels like only half of the material I had to learn had anything to do with my major or minor. Now frankly, I wouldn't mind maybe taking a class or two of something that interests me outside of my main curriculum, but give me that choice. Then there's the point where I think maybe 10% of the stuff I did had direct experience.

And that last one is what really matters. In one of my classes I had to do a phone survey, calling people and asking them questions. It was annoying at times, people whining at you, but at least it was direct experience. However, most classes literally just want you to regurgitate information and allow you to use it in a real world environment.

What's the point? Information is easy to get. Go on Google, type your question, get answer, done. I personally stopped going to classes because of this ideology. I thought, if this class is just going to be about regurgitating info on a test, I'll just read the book which has all the answers in my own time. Why should I waste an hour and 30 minutes of my time here?

So in the end, college in the USA has become nothing more than spitting out information that's shoved into your head, with little direct experience to go by and tuition prices that for many have been going higher and higher. Then, to put the final nail in the coffin, a college degree doesn't even hold much merit as it did before. Before, one could get by with a high school education. Then it became that one needed a college education to get by. Now its gotten to the point where you need an even higher education to get properly by.

It is an absolute mess.

Their job is to make their college students have an all round education and a lot of stuff that seems pointless can actually be pretty important to your daily life regardless of your major. That being said, it's still annoying as crap and I hate that many general education classes are harder than major classes.

They need you to have a bunch of unnecessary classes so you spend $500 dollars on a bunch of 'required' textbooks that you end up never using.

Yeah. I did start a university course, but didn't like it so left fairly early, but as far as I know if you take say, English Literature, you just do English Literature-related classes. Which makes sense because that's the degree you chose.

May be a lil' off-topic, but I've encountered many Americans who would complain about their college system. I mean, is college that expensive out there? Don't you have at least some state budget free positions, at least if you have good grades?

Here in the Netherlands you go from elementary to middle school. In middle school you still get everything the first 3 years, then after that you can pick a general direction (medical/biological, creative/culture, technical, economical) then you still get mostly every subject because middle school is supposed to prepare you for college. You can still drop a few subjects though. Like you don't have to do both French AND German if you're going in a technical direction. And you don't have to do physics or chemistry if you're going in a cultural direction. Then after finishing middle school you go to University if you's a smart kid. Otherwise you go to HBO or MBO or just straight into society working. Don't know what I can compare HBO and MBO to in America/Britain. At MBO, HBO and Uni you don't get any sort of general education, it's all just focused on getting your bachelors degree.

tl;dr: We only get general education until the age of 15, because until that age kids have no idea what they're gonna do later and they need to be prepared for every possible follow-up education. After that you can focus on whatever.

The state that I live in does have one 100% free university. However, even if you meet the academic standards from high school you still have to be income eligible (as in be considered near poverty level).

General education is more than a money trap to me. I've found use and gained knowledge from a variety of courses I once laughed off as completely useless.
