We had a rattlesnake in our backyard yesterday. Pretty crazy. Fire fighter came and their policy is to kill them so they had to cut its head off

This one was probably at least 3 feet. Has anyone ever had experience with snakes in their area?

Not in my area (fortunately there are no snakes in the city, only big rats) but I once encountered this fellow on the countryside, during the night near a pond, in the middle of a street in front of a house I had rented with my family:

It's easy to scare the smaller snakes away if you have a stick or something, they won't put much of a fight and will scurry away once you start pushing them around into the wild, or leave them alone long enough for them to leave. They're far from the worst thing we have here, kinda unintimidating compared to a wild boar.

I also touched several harmless snakes (including a huge yellow boa that wrapped itself around my neck and shoulders) in a shop that had tons of reptiles, some in glass cages filled with water, others wandering around on the floor. People had to be careful not to step on them, or else a catastrophe would occur, which is the most likely reason why that shop disappeared and got replaced with another.

I just have garter snakes in my area. I have only interacted with other snakes in zoos and animal interaction programs. And even then, only constrictors.

I love snakes, but there aren't many in the city. I'd take a king cobra though if I had the space.

Their policy is to kill it??!! Does your town/city not have an animal control agency or animal shelter that would just come and take it away? I'm actually pretty surprised that fire fighters even showed up at all. We don't have many large or poisonous snakes where I live so I haven't given any thought into how to deal with one if I ever saw one.

We thought fire fighters were overkill too but all the animal control places were closed I guess because of Labor Day hours. And yeah the fire fighters kill them because they're dangerous to have around since they're really venomous

We felt kinda bad since snakes kill pests but it's a danger to the kids and pets in the neighorhood so it's for the best

I've seen just a few snakes where I used to live. They never attacked me so I let them be

Garter snakes are the only ones I've seen and they're harmless. My friend had a python though. That was gross.

There are so many snakes and insects here, the fire department would probably laugh at us if we called them.

Don't kill snakes. Snakes are sweet, sweet creatures.

I was gonna ask about the firefighters and about killing the poor snake as well, but just assumed it was normal 'cause it's 'murica and stuff.

The risk of skin grafts or losing a limb after getting bit by a rattlesnake is well worth the effort to kill it. If not you, someone else later.
Rattle Snakes ain't no joke. I've come close to getting bit by a few in my life. Lucky af.

I used to have one one as a pet. A corn snake, really gorgeous animal. Used to my brother's actually, since I was way too young to actually feed it. And I didn't have the stomach to give it baby mice, I only watched the process once and it made me sick. He named it Salazar, unoriginally, but he was a wonder to look at. Not poisonous thankfully cause he did bite my brother once on the thumb. It also managed to flee from its case once but that's an entirely different story.

This ^

Anti venom is exensive af too

Snakes are one thing but rattlesnakes, although we did feel a little bad, are worth killing. A neighborhood full of kids is not a place for a rattlesnake

If you're wearing a suit that protects you from its bite (and we humans have plenty of those) then there's no reason to kill it.

People don't kill snakes that are FAR more dangerous than this one, because all in all, snakes don't mean any harm and even the fastest snakes can be caught by humans with enough precision. Killing is never the answer, no matter how dangerous the animal is. It only comes down to that for defense purposes with certain fast predators, but even then making a lot of noise with whatever weapon you have is all you need to scare the animal away, and snakes are no different, only that they aren't out to get food that is as big as a human, unless it's a moderately big snake. If you had one in your backyard, just wait it out or scare it away with any object and it'll go away. If you have a dog or a cat or something, keep it in-doors. There are thousands of way you could've dealt with this rattlesnake, and if it was only 3 ft long, it was a pretty young one.

Killing was a reasonable answer for this specific situation imo

I would've rather have had animal control take it but they were closed. What else can we do? We can't just let it go. My area is full of pets and kids who play outside
