Why does Obama identify as black?

Not sure how "deep" this discussion would be considered, so mods feel free to move this thread if you find it necessary.

Besides being half-white from his mother's side, Obama has said that his dad was barely a factor in his life and that his mother and maternal grandmother are the ones who sacrificed a lot to give him the best life they could. So why does Obama identify as primarily black?

Maybe because he takes pride in being of a minority race here in America?

I don't think he identifies as black, that's a very strange way of putting it. Personally, I don't put much weight into race or colour, but some people do. You can't call him white because he's not, he has colour to his skin, well we all do, but his is a darker colour and that is why people say he is black.

America has a sort of one-drop policy in the way they view race. That's mostly why. That and regardless of his status of mixed, he was going to be referred to as black due to him visually being black.

Yeah, it's fairly different from latin America, in America even a single drop of blood makes you totally black. This was both done to suppress the black vote and to bolster numbers for the civil rights (more people will fight for black rights if more people are seen as black). As such someone that's half black or even just a quarter black is "black" even if the rest is white.

Because the minority is what seems to be the one that people always go by or call others.

Correct, our History of racism involved this thing called the "One-drop rule" where all it took was "one drop" (any confirmed connection) of African blood to be considered African American/Black. It was never an official law (to my knowledge) but widely practice and continues to this day (old habits die hard).

Because how would you know that he was half-white unless he told you?

On the flip side, if a mixed person looked predominately white, how would you know that they were half-black unless they told you?

I don't think this plays into racism at all tbh.

I find it strange when a predominately white-looking person identifies as black when they don't visually pass as black. Not that it's wrong or anything; it's just odd.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

What else can he identify as? Whether his father was an important figure in his life or not is beside the point; his skin is black, so he is black (or rather, what is generally classed as black, even if it's not specifically black).
