I mean yeah it could just be Toei screwing up as always. But, if it is also included in the manga version then some things might need reevaluation (If Super is taken into consideration).

The future androids arent weaker then the present ones. Trunks says he was fighting them ok but theres no way for him to know how strong they are. Future Gohan thought the exact same thing and thought if he fought them one at a time he could win. He was proven completely wrong when 17 admitted he wasnt even using half his strength. They even thought Vegeta was doing "ok" against 18 until he had a humiliating defeat.

Google Chrome Favourite Manga Dragon Ball and One Piece	Not to mention that Goku, after recovering, says unequivocally that if Vegeta couldn't beat the Androids, he wouldn't stand a chance against them or Cell either.
