Sure the same loveable clichés are still here, the only difference being that they put far more emphasis into what caused this apocalypse, to a scientific degree even.
Exactly! This is I think the big reason why The Strain stands out amongst other series of the same nature. They manage to provide the right amount of information mixed with scientific knowledge to help giving the viewer a sense of realism they normally don't get in what ultimately is a completely fictional and unrealistic monster apocalypse type of show. It makes all the difference as it engrosses you in the story on a much deeper level and also makes you more invested in the characters.

Also Quilan is bae. <3

You'll be fully caught up with the series in no time. I told ya!

Oh yeah, and this is definetely still horror. The supernatural breed, yeah, but there are plenty of horrific and gory scenarios in this show.

I haven't seen any of that cheese Steve mentioned either, though for me there's nothing too cheesy. That word just limits our way of seeing things depending on our liking, it's a pretty s***ty word.

Yeah, for people who like/are used to horror The Strain isn't really going to feel terrifying at all, but that's not to say it isn't horror based. It creates quite a bit of suspenseful moments and has a lot of gore. I think a lot of people have just grown desensitized to horror in general because we're bombarded by it in fiction and (sadly) IRL on the news. Plus, in this digital era we're living in which everything is so accessible and there's typically more supply than demand in terms of content being created it really is increasingly difficult to impress and to stand out. But at the end of the day horror doesn't have to be the scariest, darkest, most vile and disturbing thing in the world, anything that suggests a sense of fright -- even if small -- can be considered horror.

She's just the best! I've always been drawn to the active, free-spirit, resilient and intelligent female archetype -- even before I was even conscious that there WAS a clear pattern in the characters I'd naturally gravitate to. And Ducth is the perfect embodiment of all of that. She's so refreshingly open-minded and has just the right touch of madness in her character, but is also SO smart, so compassionate and shrewd and determined and she pours so much heart into all her actions on the show that it's honestly difficult NOT to feel compelled by her. Love her!

I've watched so much horror stuff it's hard to scare me, however the tension from a zombie apocalypse is always pretty great, and now, having switched the typically slow and untimidating zombies with VAMPIRES... The tension is a lot higher than usual. Vampires are normally the opposite of what zombies are. They're not decomposing corpses, they're very resilient. They're not weak and easily overpowered, they're about as strong as a man and can grow to become even stronger, and a lot faster too, as evidenced by The Master who can smash heads to pieces and lift a 500lb coffin in less than a frame of a second, yet cover hundreds of feet like he's a goddam cheetah.

And now with the current body he's taken from Bolivar, he's a freaking blur.

Point is, this is a lot more tense than any zombie apocalypse plot I've ever seen, as it usually is with vampires (e.g. 30 Days of Night). Now, here we have a combination of the two, and it's brilliant. Mind you, this is a concept even a child could come up with, but the point is, it's very well executed, far better than I could've expected, and who else is there to thank but Guillermo del Toro himself?

She's also pretty damn attractive, especially with that british accent. And yeah I like her little talk with Eph about the bonobos, how males or females might "shank" other members from the same sex, and how human society tends to not allow or stomach that sort of deal (or something along those lines).

Speaking of stomaching, it would've been funny if Dutch had replied "I'm allergic to pineapples" when Eichorst was feeding her those.

Edit: I like Abe's line at the end of the last episode of the second season.

"Long ago, I pledged my life to opposing these monsters. Since then, I have lost everything dear to me, driven to the edge of madness in my quest for knowledge and vengeance. Now, one step away from victory, why do I feel more trepidation than triumph? What insidious plan does the Master have for humankind? We have become overconfident as a species. We ignorantly believed in our primacy over all else over all other species, over our planet itself. Will we perish under our own greed and selfishness? Or will we overcome and survive? A short time ago, our current reality was beyond imagination. Now we have one last chance to win back our world. In order to defeat the Master, we must be as cold and ruthless and savage as he is and yet without becoming monsters ourselves."

And yes I'm onto Season 3 already, and I don't like what the Master might be setting up with that factory.

Dutch is a TOTAL babe too, yes! <3

The factory in Season 3 is honestly to me one of the creepiest concepts the series has created so far.
I think I'm going to watch the latest episode now! Very soon we'll be having a weekly discussion here! ^_^

ETA: OMG season 4 episode 4 had me SHOOK. That ending was...... amazing and also creepy as hell. Also Dutch is officially my favourite character of this entire series, what a legend! I can't wait to discuss the new episodes openly with you. I'm SO excited after watching this episode, it's unreal!!!

I don't like the new intro. I suppose I'll get used to it though.

At least it's better than this one.

The first one is the best.

Also, I wanted to say this for a while, but I forgot.

I like that Guillermo added the little fangs in the front of the mouth on the Strigoi.

I like when vampires have this design trait, it's a neat reference and homage to Count Orlok.

Angel's death on Ep 9 of the third season didn't really leave much of an impact on me. However it was an AWESOME death. The way the flames just engulfed him and how for a millisecond he had his wrestler costume on. That was great.

Descanse en paz, Ángel de la Plata.

Edit: Episode 10 of Season 3, Zack just keeps on getting more unberable, and after nuking Lady Liberty I've lost all faith in this inconsistent character. May he rot in hell alongside all of those nazis because he just doomed humanity, I imagine. Onto Season 4 I go.

I didn't even remember that Angel dude, to be honest. :p

This is why I prefer to marathon series with a lot of seasons out instead of keeping up with new episodes weekly and have to wait around eternities for new seasons to roll out. You retain so much more detail when you get to watch everything straight and it's generally a much more enthralling experience.

So I think it's no longer a spoiler that Zack is literally the worst kid in the history of TV?!
Honestly -- TRUE STORY -- after Season 3 ended I literally joined communities dedicated to hating Zack. I was SO enraged I literally googled "Zack The Strain hate group" lmao. And unsurprisingly found quite a few. That character is THE WORST. Completely inconsistent like you said from a character development perspective -- the writers constantly mess him up -- and the most insufferable little brat ever depicted on a series. I thought Joffrey from Game of Thrones was bad, but Joffrey was at least amusing to watch and you loved to hate him. Zack is downright a little c*** with zero fun about his character.

I call bulls*** on four bullets from some AK nonsense gun being able to bring down a freaking tiger. Maybe Zack now has plot armor, I don't care. I don't like how much animals suffer in this, especially dogs who now live like raccoons, and it's so laughably how far humans have fallen. They've pretty much accepted defeat and the strigoi use them as goddamn cattle. And you were right, that blood factory is pretty creepy.

I haven't watched GoT but I'm pretty confident Joffrey never endangered humanity like Zack did. He's certainly the worst written kid character I've ever seen in a show, and to think I kinda liked him at the start because he seemed smart but naive like a kid of his age.

I'm sure we share the feeling of wanting to strangle the kid first before strangling Eichorst.

And yeah I like marathoning anything really, it makes things easier when series have already ended.

Yeah, the strigoi have completely dominated humanity at this point. But I find the current stage of the series very interesting because it reminds me in some ways of the Cold War and the state of geopolitical tension after WWII. Like, humans and strigoi are coexisting seemingly in a "peaceful" manner -- as civil as it gets when it comes to species dominance anyway -- but you can tell the tension never left and that the fake imagine of hope for the future working together is a bunch of BS sold to keep humans as subservient and cooperative as possible. But like in any good Cold War, opposition gradually starts to rise and things eventually escalate into friction.

Really enjoying this season thus far. Still haven't watched episode 5. It's late here and I resume my regular work schedules tomorrow so I'll leave the ep for a different time.

And I've finally caught up, that was definetely a fun ride.

Next episode comes out in 4 days. Let's see what our fellow humans will come up with to stop this strigoi pest. Assuming there's a happy ending to all of this.

Edit: lol, if it came out in 4 years that'd be horrible

Finally watched ep 5! I knew New Horizons would basically be a strigoi fast food place -- human edition. Not sure what else Eph was expecting to find there. That moment when the Master speaks to him via that random lady who was helping him get to New Horizons was cool... now that he knows Zack is alive he will have a lot more fuel to keep fighting.
BTW side note, but I REALLY don't want Eph to hook up with that woman he's travelling with... the show has been hinting that romance is bound to happen between the two but I'd reallyyyy love for him and Dutch to remain together when they (hopefully) finally reunite :(

Speaking of Dutch, girl continues to have the biggest balls of all the characters on this series. Like, no joke. Sometimes I feel like with her drive and fire she could maybe even face the Master himself~~ :w00t: I can't believe she managed to escape -- AGAIN -- by creating this big riot and using every tool she could find to push through everything and everyone and actually beat Eichorst in the process. Obviously Eichorst didn't die, but this should teach him a lesson not to ever underestimate Dutch again, she's escaped from his hands twice now, and she keeps on getting better and better at evasion and retaliation... next time you probably shouldn't spare her, you fool. Just saiyan~

And Quinlan's romantic interest in the 19th Century was actually kinda sweet? He looks pretty funky as a human though. Much better as a strigoi tbqh.
