The Strain is an American horror drama television series that premiered on FX on July 13, 2014. It was created by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, based on their novel trilogy of the same name.

A mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism ravages the city of New York.

Season 1 Trailer:

I was wondering if anybody here watched this series? I could use having someone to discuss it with, specially now that there's a new season airing!
The best way I have to describe this series is that it is sorta like The Walking Dead, but better in a lot of ways. Its approach is more pragmatic and more centered around the relation between spread and containment of epidemics, which confers more realism to the storyline. Also, even though the series is roughly about vampires, they are NOT the vampires pop culture has come to cement on the media in recent years. It doesn't even really matter what kind of monster they are, tbh, it's truly not about that -- it's a lot more about questions of humanity and how people can come together in a new world where they're no longer the species at the top of the food chain.

Kinda getting "I am Legend" vibes from this. Guillermo del Toro definetely makes this worth watching, I enjoy anything under his seal of approval.

Funnily enough I thought of you while making this thread, Darker! I was like "hmmm Darker may watch this series, let's give it a shot!".

I will say that the series has some issues with unfocused narrative at times, and that much like every horror based series it has its corny moments. But overall the quality is pretty great and one thing I love about The Strain specially in comparison to similar formats like The Walking Dead is that the creatures are actually intelligent, well-organized and have intricate motives driving them, as opposed to being mere brainless crawling monsters with zero intellectual ability.

Lemme know if you start watching it so we can discuss it, Darker.

I'll check out the first few episodes to see what's up, and we'll see if I like it or not, though I don't expect it to watch it whole, being four seasons and all.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

I watched the first season and like...maybe three episodes of the second and then never went back to it.

It was interesting to begin with but I just found it got boring, never really went anywhere different for me. Has some cool elements but it was a bit too cheesy for me.
Maybe I'll go back to it one day but probably not.

Also is it really horror? I don't remember anything scary happening really it was more like Supernatural's breed of "horror" from what I remember.

I watched through half of season 1, but I fell out of it. It just became too cluttered imo. It may have become better, but when I wasn't impressed by the acting of David Bradley, who happened to be the reason I started watching this show, I stopped.

Well, horror is a broad genre. you've just described it as being a supernatural type of horror, so I guess that would make it horror, right
But truthfully I'd say that it's only horror inspired, meaning it has some horror elements such as gore and some disturbing imagery as well as an overall eerie atmosphere and some tense moments, but it's not likely to make you lose your sleep at night by any means unless you're very sensitive to graphic content.

That's interesting to me because I've personally stayed consistently engaged and interested in The Strain.
But it's not a series I'd tell you to push through the first episodes as it then gets super compelling and brilliant and you must get there to fully enjoy it. If you didn't enjoy the first episodes of season 1 chances are this series just isn't for you, and I happen to have Season 1 as probably my favourite season of the entire thing, personally.

It could also be a matter of personal taste since I particularly love the realistic approach with which the thematics of epidemic control were covered in the first season. I'm just naturally very interested in that kind of stuff.

I'm also drawn to stuff like that. I do praise the show for being different from other Zombie shows though even though it wasn't for me.

I could give it another shot, but right now I'm gonna watch through The Wire.

I meant Supernatural as in the series :p not once has it been scary really it just contains horror monsters if that makes sense.

Yeah I liked the realistic look at it initially but it got kind of silly for me. It's like when Resident Evil or whatever starts out good but then "Oh the army was overwhelmed" freaking how man.

Not entirely the same thing, with The Strain it's more that the vampires are a bit overpowered...but only until they're not.

Oh, so you did post in this thread after all. Ooops.

Keep watching! Like I said, the first season is one of my faves. It's pretty exciting seeing how gradually the epidemic spreads. I loved seeing the first survivors of the airplane crash slowly losing their humanity. Specially the mother. You never knew when she was going to snap.

Like I said in spam, this hooded monster is awesome. You can tell Guillermo del Toro had something to do with this.

This is some very creepy atmosphere, and I feel like these humans are completely defenseless against these vampire zombie-thingies, which I don't like 'cause I like these characters. Wasn't expecting it to be the 1 hour long kinda show though.
