I think for the most part Brotherhood is far superior and I think most people agree. But what in FMA do you guys actually like better than Brotherhood? Personally I'd say Roy Mustang vs Fuhrer Bradley. I mean, that fight was crazy awesome and probably my second favorite fight out of the two series combined. |

FMA 2003 is a better story that focuses more on character interactions, development and plot. Brotherhood is more typical of the action Shounen that tries more to be visually entertaining. While characters aren't often as diverse or complex as they are in the 2003 series, they sometimes come off as a bit more likable with character traits that make you remember them. Overall, the 2003 anime is a lot more concerned with being complex. Characters are a lot less quirky and, for lack of better words, Shounen like that we see in brotherhood and there's definitely a much darker tone put on the 2003 series than in Brotherhood. If you want my honest point, I think the 2003 series is better in terms of an actual product but it's a taste you need to acquire. Brotherhood meanwhile gives you what you need, awesome Shounen action. Some of the things in the 2003 series I enjoyed are some of the character interaction including the homunculus. Lust, Sloth and Wrath have a lot of development or point in the series. That even goes for all the homunculus in general who play a huge part in the lore of the story. Hell, even Shou Tucker gets more development. It's probably around Greed's death that the tone of the series changes. For me, I like a good drama so this is fine. |

I have only watched FMAB completly, but not FMA I enjoyed Brotherhood's (actually BONES) high-quality animation, fantastic would be an understatement Soundtrack PLUS bombastic Final Act Scar vs Bradley was one of the best animated fighs in the whole series. YOKI!!!! My boy is pure gold whenever he pops on-screen |

I've always put off watching the 2003 series as I was really satisfied with Brotherhood, but you've made a strong argument here. Is it worth watching the 2003 series despite having recently watched Brotherhood? |

Honestly, I'd say so, despite the 7-8 year gap, the 2003 anime still holds up very well in terms of animation, voice acting (on both sides of the ocean) and is still a very enjoyable series. I have a feeling you'll probably enjoy the story more in FMA 2003 but the overall character personalities and action of Brotherhood. The only bad thing I can really say about the 2003 series is the ending, specifically the tie in movie Path to Shamballa which gives the series a full definite conclusion. It's not the worse thing but it certainly isn't the best. If you've seen Brotherhood, chances are you'll still probably prefer it, just because of the overall tone it gives. But I doubt you'll go into FMA 2003 without some measure of enjoyment. |

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

Yes, though its bee years since I've seen the movie so I really only remember a few key scenes and not the actual basis of the plot. |

'03 often had better direction--for example the scene in which Ed performs human transmutation and sees his "mother" comes off as more impactful in '03 with various camera angles showing all the creepy, er, bits among other things, whereas the same scene in Brotherhood comes off as more cheesily presented with a boring camera pan and this red tint (wording?). Just one example off the top of my head. Prefer Brotherhood in general overall but '03 is definitely worth the watch. |
