Why do DVD's take so long to come out?

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

It's damn annoying.

Desperate to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 because we couldn't afford to go to the cinema for it, DVD won't be out until late August/September...f***ing why?

It's not on in the cinemas here at all, maybe in some places in the UK it is but I doubt there are many showings.

The most a film ever gets shown here is like 2 months and GOG2 came out in April or so.

It's pretty daft, surely they should have DVD's and Blu-rays produced and ready to go shortly after.
Though I suppose one reason may be seeing how many times the film is watched to judge how many to produce, which is fairly sensible but why not just produce a few million copies, something like GOG2 is obviously going to sell tons.

I bet it would help combat piracy a bit too, why wait 4+ months to see something you missed in the cinema when you can watch it a month or two later for free in the same quality.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

One of the reasons is so that people will see it in the cinema. Why bother going to the cinema if you know you can get it on DVD if you wait a tiny amount? If you know that missing it in the cinema means waiting months to see it, while others you know have already seen it, then you're more likely to spring for a cinema ticket.

Really? I feel like it's the opposite. A long time ago it felt like DVD's would take forever to come out (or maybe that's just my imagination looking back on it). Nowadays they seem to come out almost instantly. There are some movies that stay in the theater for so long it feels like the DVD comes out while it's still playing. lol

My Dear Melancholy,

Maybe because you're in a different country but despite the official release being Aug22. A lot of stores here are already selling it.

That's like 3 months isn't it? Idk, it doesn't feel too long to me. Never bothers me. There hasn't been any movies that I've been dying to see either though and if there is I usually watch them at the theaters, so it doesn't matter how long it takes to come out to me.

It's a long time when you have to avoid spoilers on the internet.

I don't really think it should be an issue if they come out while a film is airing, I'm sure most people would prefer to watch at the cinema regardless. It is no doubt a superior experience especially if you can get to an iMax showing.

Plus a DVD and especially a Blu-ray can cost more than a cinema ticket.

For me and my gf it costs us £26 just to get the bus to the cinema so we can't go often, this money in no way benefits the cinema or whoever made the movie.
The tickets themselves are only £6-8 usually, versus a DVD which can be like £15 or £20 for a Blu-Ray.

Surely they would earn more for the DVD's considering they cost more?
If 100 million people were going to watch Infinity War, the DVD came out the same day and 70 million of those people decided they couldn't be bothered going to the cinema and would rather get the Blu-ray...it would surely earn Disney more?
Obviously that screws the theatre profits but some sort of middle ground would be fine, as said most people are going to prefer the theatre experience and if they don't...well they were going to get the DVD anyway so it makes no difference, the only thing it does is inconvenience the customer.

Plenty people will buy the DVD/Blu-ray AND go to the theatre if it's a big movie too.

Can't remember the last time I bought a DVD. It takes so long that if you're going to do it legally you might as well just rent it from a streaming service for a fraction of the price.
