So we all know about all the tremendous plot-driven zenkais that were pulled in the Namek arc.
How could the concept become less ridiculous while still advancing the fighters battle power?
If elimination of the concept is preferred, how could the characters in that arc compete with the variety of foes?

It was the best way to get them stronger in such a short amount of time. I realize that it has to be the biggest pull of power, but I quite honestly am fine with it.

I thought Zenkais were clever but maybe it's best they're eliminated. They were a good plot point in the Frieza saga but I think its time is over. We need new ways to power up characters other than training and transformations cause it's so repetitive. They used to be more creative with it. The ROSAT, gravity chamber, ultra divine water, that teleporting room at Kami's lookout. They need something new. They could make it like an RPG where they need to travel or pass a test or something in search of an item that will make them stronger. Or they could learn new abilities as well. Cause all they do now is blast attacks. We need techniques that set the characters apart from one another. Like Tien's moves or Hit's Tokitobashi

How about building upon the premise of teamwork dynamics and technique amplification which the Saiyan arc introduced only for it to be more or less discarded later on? Understandably, such circumstances allowing for collaboration to occur would only start to emerge mid-way through the arc. Before reaching that juncture, you would have to find some alternative means for Vegeta to defeat Freeza's subordinates? My recommendation? Play to his underhanded conniving persona in the arc. Make him exploit guerrilla and sleight of hand tactics to acquire an advantage over his opponent - think his irritating Zarbon's eyes using bits of the terrain except applied on a grander scale. You could incorporate the Oozaru transformation into his means for survival. His comment on the Saiyan tail regenerating itself over time suggested we might see it again. Sadly, this prediction never comes to pass.

You could still allow for Vegeta to acquire a power increase by having the Grand Elder unlock his potential in preparation for the Ginyu Force. Gradual power progression mechanic could allow for him and the others to continue pushing the limits until the fight with Freeza.

In this alternative take on the Namek arc, some other changes would have to be made like tempering the power levels of everyone. Perhaps instead of Freeza's maximum output being in the hundreds of millions, you could reduce it to a more semi-realistic fraction like 1,200,000. The ambiance of his character's power would remain in-tact. Furthermore, his suppressed forms would need to have their respective amounts lowered as well. Vegeta and the others would need to improvise in using their techniques and intelligence to survive long enough for Piccolo and Goku to arrive. Both of whom would require considerable Kaioken multipliers just to hold themselves upright against Freeza's self-limited power emissions.

Rather than heightening the Kaioken's multiplier to variables in the double digits with little substantive bridging between it and Goku's maximum amplifier of x4 against Vegeta, it should have resumed where it had been left off mid-way through the climactic final fight in the Saiyan arc. Goku progresses the technique further with multipliers numbering from 5 to maybe 8, with 9 posing an equivalent detriment as x3 for Saiyan arc Goku and x10 assuming the same role as x4/x20.

Piccolo's zenith would be drastically reduced to something more reasonable like 80,000-200,000 - with the Namekian fusion's potent mechanics coupled with Nail's already super-powerful might being the chief causes behind his enormous increase in power. However, even with this increase, he would still require Kaioken to hold up to par with Freeza. Speaking of whom, six days should only just be enough time for a "genius" like himself to barely grasp the fundamentals. Utilising a x2 or x3 amplifier would be Piccolo's limit for the remainder of the arc.

Goku is much, much weaker than his canonical iteration. If I were to offer an estimate, I would say his power level might be in the mid to high tens of thousands, notably below Piccolo's - something like 75,000. However, bear in mind his Kaioken output is superior. The final Super Saiyan transformation would provide a final multiplier of x20, with the damage and energy expenditure being noted as the root causes for his battle against Freeza's maximum being so rigidly close initially.

I think under these settings, the humans and Piccolo would have viable odds to remain competitive in the later arcs - especially if they're able to "surpass" the limitations of the Kaioken's x10 maximum by raising it to further amounts like 11, 12, ect. Really, what doomed them most of all was the gross inordinate inflation of power levels early on with zenkais and x50 transformations exacerbating things. Keep it all relatively leveled and you might have everyone remaining fairly close to one another in strength.
