Frieza's Voice

So I've been rewatching Dragon Ball Z FUNimation dubbed and I didn't really realize it until now, but I actually prefer Chris Aryes's voice over Linda Young's. There aren't a lot of voices that were changed that I prefer over the original, but Idk Linda Young just doesn't fit very well for Frieza. She does a great job with other characters like Baba and Genkai (YYH). I also feel like Aryes's voice is much closer to the Japanese voice actor.

Yeah, Linda isn't too bad but she simply doesn't fit Frieza.

Chris on the other hand is much closer to Frieza's japanese voice than Linda's was; he gives that calm, yet cunning and terrifying side of the character.

Chris Ayres is great. Arguably just as good as Ryusei Nakao.

Nothing beats JPN voice. Ayres or Linda might do a good job, but the depth which Ryusei brings forth as Furiza is beyond words.

Kai's voice is good, but he speaks too fast and the dialogue is too try-hard. As strange as some of the FUNI dub dialogue was (i.e. "Ride'em cowboy!"), Young's Frieza simply had a presence which went beyond the show. Kind of like how Jeice's Australian accent and Ginyu's voice actor (FUNI) have me remembering the character years later. I wouldn't peg this on nostalgia either, as there were numerous FUNI voices I look back at unfondly (i.e. Semi-Perfect Cell, Krillin, Future Trunks)

I don't like Kai, I only know this Frieza voice from the movie and video games.

Chris Ayres >>>>>>>>>>>>> Linda Young.... it ain't even close. Linda Young had to be one of the worst castings of the original dub, she did not fit her roll well at all. She literally uses the same voice for Genkai as she does for Freeza, and it sounded a hell of a lot better coming from the pruny old woman than Freeeza

Chris Ayres is an absolute godsend. I got no beef with Linda Young. She's a good fit for Uranai Baba and Gekai from YYH, but she was just the wrong choice for a character like Freeza. Chris nails it with his delivery and tone. It doesn't hurt that he's not working off a script that's hot garbage.

Linda was just a voice that just did not fit the script or character, which is a shame because it's not a bad performance. Linda Young is clearly giving it her all, giving what a voice actor should do. But once you have a script this crappy, what can you do but give it your all? Let's be honest, would Ayers have been any better if he had to say.

"Let's ride em' cowboy?"

Probably...but it would still be stupid.

I love Linda Young's voice for certain characters. Her run as Freeza is nostalgic for me.

But I do really like Ayers' go at it. A sort of sophisticated male's voice fits Freeza more than a haggard old woman's.

I am glad that Chris took over for Linda Young when she left, but legitimately I prefer Linda Young more than him. She has a lot more emotion, and makes him sound much more evil. And the 'woman voice vs. man voice' argument doesn't stack up too well with me considering Frieza is so much more alien.
But like I said, Chris does a good job. Glad they found him.

Congrats on finally getting to experience a voice that does justice to the real Freeza.

I'm mostly familiar with Linda from hearing her in the games and a few clips in YT, but while I may have heard less from Chris, I prefer him a million times over.

Chris actually sounds somewhat intimidating, while Linda seems to be trying too hard and falls flat with her performance.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.
