Dunkirk is a film by Christopher Nolan about the mass evacuation of troops from the beach at Dunkirk, France in 1937. It stars Tom Hardy, Harry Styles, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Fionn Whitehead.

I saw it today and I was very impressed. I love the way it jolts back and forth over the course of two days. Then it finally pieces the story together near the end. Harry Styles was surprisingly good too. He could have an acting career if he keeps it up. Also, this film uses water really well. There's plenty of oh s*** moments where characters are about to drown.

I liked it.

My question is....izit an art film or entertaining piece of work?

Cuz I have no idea abt the evacuation stuff you mentioned

I found the film, based on its trailer to be extremely vague/dry/un-interesting.

It's based on true events. Soldiers were stranded in the war and civilians using their own boats went to save a lot of them despite the danger.

I kinda lost interest in the movie after watching a review, to be honest I just want some World War action not necessarily something gritty. The actual film making and direction doesn't interest me.

Probably not for either of you then. It focuses on drama more than action.

Drama done right is better than action done wrong. Ex: Wolf of Wall Street/Titanic/GodFather compared to Bayformers & most DC/MCU

Dunkirk relies more on film-making "components" rather than actual film itself

A good film requires

1. Content
2. Good storyboading/screenplay
3. Entertainment quotient

Judging based on its trailer alone, I'd say Dunkirk has none of these, but it'll get nominated for Oscar though. Cuz y'know. Only world-class cinema elitist can appreciate smallest detail in otherwise largely uninteresting film

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I'm actually looking forward to seeing this, which is surprising because I've never been one for World War films. I really enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge though, so I earmarked this as something I wanted to see when I heard about it. I'm interested to see how Nolan handles it because this seems different to the type of film he usually directs.

Saw this tonight. I thought it was good, but it didn't blow me away. I think it's because I was expecting something more along the lines of Hacksaw Ridge, when this was less about 'gung ho' action scenes and more about presenting the tension and helplessness they all felt. Good though, I enjoyed it.
