Ben Affleck's Future as Batman Reportedly in Doubt

Warner Bros. is plotting a future for the Batman movie franchise without Ben Affleck. The Hollywood Reporter states that WB has plans to "gracefully" usher the movie superstar out of the DC movie universe as it moves forward with a planned trilogy of Batman movies by director Matt Reeves.

According to THR, there would be an in-continuity reason for the change in Batman actors, which probably means that the Affleck's Bruce Wayne would either retire or be killed off.

THR cites Ben Affleck's age as a major reason for the potential change. Affleck is currently 45 years old and he'd quickly be approaching 50 by the time The Batman comes out in 2019 or later.

While older action stars aren't uncommon in Hollywood (Robert Downey Jr. is 52,) Affleck is also significantly older than his fellow Justice League stars. Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot are both younger than 35, while Ezra Miller is only 24 years old. Jason Momoa is the only other Justice Leaguer who's anywhere close to 40.

There's a couple of possibilities as to what could happen next. Affleck could possibly remain Batman for the planned Justice League movies, while Matt Reeves casts another actor, with plans to eventually transition Reeves' Batman into the wider universe. WB could also have Affleck's Bruce Wayne pass off the mantle to a successor like Nightwing or Azrael.

The landmark 1993 Knightfall storyline left Wayne temporarily paralyzed, leading him to appoint a vigilante called Azrael as his Batman replacement. When Azrael went rogue, Wayne came out of retirement to stop him and then swiftly retired once more, appointing Dick Grayson (AKA Robin) as the new Batman. That was so successful that when Wayne was assumed dead in 2009, Grayson took on the cowl for a second time. (Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises even went this route, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt's John Blake getting the keys to the Batcave after Bale's Bruce Wayne was presumed dead.)

Introduce Dick Grayson. Give him the spotlight he deserves. Introduce Tim Drake or Jason Todd. Have a Nightwing vs Robin/Red Hood/Red Robin (depending on who the dead Robin) movie based on Battle of the Cowl.

I don't like Ben Afleck, but they need to stop changing Batman. He's in too deep now.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

I really hope this is bogus Affleck was awesome as Batman and he got so f***ing ripped for the role.

But on the other hand, it does make some sense. An old Batman doesn't really fit in with this brand new Justice League.

I just hope that he stays on as a mentor.
It'd be really cool if they did Terry McGinnis, give Batman Beyond some love.
In this age of metahumans a more high tech suit and a younger Batman trained to fight them would make sense.

Could have Nightwing and Batfleck train him up or something.

They kinda did with this tribute.

Fortunately for fans DC hasn't forgotten about Terry yet.

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

Damn so much nostalgia...

I really hope they go for that, it seems most incarnations of Robin would already exist within this verse so I don't think they need one to take over as Batman.

Can see them doing Red Hood for the solo Batman movie, they could easily introduce Terry there as well as Nightwing and mention more about the presumably dead Robin, which ever one they decide that is.

Assuming this would be in like 3-4 years I wonder if Dylan O'Brien would make a good Terry? He could easily pull off a young look while still having some more acting chops.

I've seen people saying Clint Eastwood would be a good Old Man Bruce Wayne.

Lol as soon as I read that my first thought was "Wait a minute...Clint looks like an old Michael Keaton..."

That would be a funny throwback if it happened, Batman from crazier times...

I feel he may be a bit too old now though, dude's 87. Can't imagine we'll have him too much longer, least not in acting health.

In any case I find it weird that WB would want to replace him, there's been some conflict I think but surely they should see how much people loved him as Batman?

But then, they are interfering with these movies a lot so guess they probably don't give a s***.

My Dear Melancholy,

It seems like Ben A. thinks he's bigger than DECU or people see him as Batman and dont pay attention to his other movies.

It's going to become a joke soon if they keep recasting Batman. I like Affleck as Batman, despite hating it before BvS came out.

That's a relief.

(THAT is what I meant to post. No f***ing idea how that isn't what copied to my clipboard. Can't trust phones, you guys.)

Wasn't it already confirmed a few weeks ago he'd be in the standalone movie anyway though?

I thought this would be about him leaving after that. Those rumours kicked up a while back and they said he was still in it.

Fine. Just get Bale back in.

Ben was undoubtedly good. I in fact enjoyed his portrayal even more so than Bale's.

But considering his age, which naturally goes without saying about the stamina, capability to carrying the role for nother 5 years or so looks quite terrifying. Dude's not like say.... Goldberg to give even best youths a run for their money as far as physical shape is concerned.

I disagree there, have you not seen how buff he is? If someone like Stallone can still portray Rocky(at least when Rocky Balboa came out) and Rambo then Ben should manage, currently he's only 44.

Some new blood sooner or later makes sense though.

Hopefully if they do it they do an actual transition not just "Yeah this guy is Batman now, deal with it"

It's certainly an easier challenge than casting another Wolverine will be anyway.
