The most popular and main characters in the series. Both saiyan warriors and eternal rivals. But who do you prefer?

Personally, I prefer Goku throughout most of the series. I probably liked Vegeta the most in the Frieza Arc. Although every moment Goku was in that arc was sick, especially Super Saiyan.

Vegeta felt pretty pointless after the Freeza Saga. Toriyama didn't build him up as Goku's rival so much as he made him the guy that told Goku that Freeza exterminated his race.

For that reason alone I'll pick Goku, plus Vegeta's made plenty of annoying mistakes throughout the series and remained uninteresting throughout most of it. At the very least, Goku was a likeable kid who was funny and honorable (and quite badass on multiple occasions) back in the original DB. How unfortunate that he kept losing grey matter the more he got older.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

It's difficult to say. Saiyan Saga through to the Cell Saga, I like Goku, but after that I prefer Goku. They both seem to progress and regress when it comes to development, but overall, I like Vegeta more.

Vegeta was far more interesting during the Frieza and Buu sagas, with the Majin Vegeta arc character development blowing anything Goku had gone through out of the damn water. In terms of whose personality I prefer, however, definitely Goku. I liked Vegeta more when I was younger, but now I can't help but notice how incredibly insecure he is around Goku. Vegeta literally psyches himself out with monologues just from Goku passing comments

"Why won't you leave me alone?!"

Saiyan Saga

Goku. It's too easy for me to like the gullible but still heroic character fighting against the, fairly stereotypical evil Vegeta.

Namek Saga

Vegeta. Goku's pretty much the same as he was in the Saiyan Arc but Vegeta finally gets to shows off his applications as a real villain and anti-hero in this saga. It's intelligence and cunning we probably never see from him again.

Cell Saga

Vegeta. It's not by much but by this point Goku's slowly starting to degrade while Vegeta has at least started getting a bit of development.

Boo Saga

Goku. I think Goku has dropped but to me, Vegeta is treated as such a terrible tool in the Boo Saga that I can't like him at all. His whole actions, from Majin Vegeta to Kid Boo, feel like a big middle finger to the character. Goku, while degrading, at least didn't throw a little childish fit cause someone was stronger than him or something.

Super

VEGETA!!!

Seriously, even with some of the more questionable things Vegeta has done throughout Super, I prefer him and honestly anyone else over the s*** bag that is Super Goku. If I have to be fair, not only is Super Goku the absolute worse incarnation of the character I've ever had to go through, he might very well be the worse anime character I've ever known. I've never felt such a nigh blatant Mary Sue character. Vegeta in Super at worse goes near his Boo self but at better times reaches levels probably not seen except in GT.

GT

Vegeta.

Goku isn't intolerable here like he is in Super, but he's not much different. Vegeta finally gets to be a good character in GT. A little gruff but obviously a good person, seen especially by his interaction with Bra, being the first to admit to use fusion with Goku and his pretty solemn remarks of trying to get everyone off Earth after Omega has seemingly killed Goku. It's easier to like a character like this over Goku who, while not terrible I suppose, is often too plain.

Vegeta has some good (awesome and fun) scenes in GT, but as a fighter (before SS4) they seriously trashed him and made him look super weak and pathetic. GT didn't completely do it right, but they did handle Vegeta better than Super did. Most of Vegeta's grudges of Goku were gone, they all should have been gone.

The only time I ever enjoyed Vegeta's characterisation was during his relapse back into the murderous Saiyan renegade. Well, it would be more appropriate to say that I enjoyed his conscience-stricken resolution to kill Buu. It was the first time he had ever put his life on the line for the sake of others. To this day, the one panel of Vegeta looking out towards Buu sombrely with resigned determination in his expression remains one of, if not my favourite panel relating to his growth as a person.

Otherwise, I generally don't enjoy either him or Goku because of their Saiyan dominancy complex, whether intentional or not. Goku's childish carefree attitude has a habit of damning everyone around him to a harsh tribulation which may have been avoided if he had taken the more sensible option. I enjoyed his character up until the end of the Freeza arc which is the last time I could say his actions weren't coming at the detriment of others. He felt more heroic and less inanely self-centred then. Although I will give him credit for finally realising that Gohan wasn't like him in lusting after the gratification of combat during the Cell Games. Plus, his intentions in wanting the next generation to be prepared for threats when he's no longer around were coming from a good place. It just wasn't executed in the best manner possible.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Honestly, neither are high on my list of favourite characters. That being said, my liking for both is pretty even. They both have some great moments, but I think I'll opt for Vegeta as he's the more interesting character to me. A lot more dimensions than Goku's 'I like food and fighting'.

Goku is a considerably more engaging and interesting character than Vegeta. I thought Piccolo was a much more interesting enemy turned rival than he is anyway. The worst thing to even happen to Dragonball was Piccolo turning into a glorified human.
