UEFA Champions League & Europa League 2017/18

Figured with qualifiers already starting for this, might as well make a topic.

Side note: it feels weird writing 2017/18. I remember playing manager games and getting that far into the future and now it's here. No Plymouth in the Premiership though, so I wasn't predicting the future.

My Grandad is ecstatic because Rangers got knocked out of Europe already. That's pretty embarrassing on their part.

The only norwegian representative Rosenborg got knocked out by Celtic after playing 0-0 on Celtic Park in the first match. They were actually favorites before the return match but lost 1-0 on Lerkendal. Celtic goes on to face Astana from Kazakhstan which should be walkover.

Never underestimate these Eastern European teams.
Astana has qualified for the Champions League before and teams like BATE Borisov are constantly pulling off upsets.

Ajax are out and PSV lost to some Croatian team as well, that can't be good for our coefficient. Think we might lose our direct qualification spot next year.

Lets hope Feyenoord and Vitesse can do good in Europe.

Yeah, those far-flung Eastern European countries can be tough away fixtures. I do feel like Celtic should be able to handle them comfortably at home though.

Hoffenheim is a tough draw for Liverpool. I'm a little more confident considering Klopp's history in the Bundesliga and how we seem to have had a good record against German teams during his reign so far.

As a westham fan I've little to say about European football, but I'm really interested in how Celtic are going to handle it. Scottish football is currently in a sorry state and so Celtic don't really have any competition and the domestic league is becoming a walk in the park for them.
My girlfriend supports Celtic, but keep yelling about hating Brendan Rogers due to his love of possession football but I feel it may be the best route for them to go in Europe as they're going to play teams much better than them where holding the ball will be the only thing keeping them alive.

My Grandad is a big Celtic fan. As a Liverpool fan, I did warn him about the negatives that come with Brendan Rodgers style of play. He's a brilliant attacking manager (one of the best in the world, imo), but his total apathy to the defensive side of it is a big drawback. I warned him that he's gonna end up just as frustrated as I was with Rodgers' insistence on passing out from the back; he actively teaches keepers and defenders to never clear the ball and always look for the pass, which leads to a lot of mistakes.

Lucky for Celtic, the league they're in means they can weather those mistakes. European football-wise, they're in a tough situation. They're a massive club and so often come with high expectations, but like you said, Scottish football is in a sorry state and they'd do well to even get out of the group stages.

I think they've outgrown the SPL. I really hope one day they find a way to get into the Premiership. I genuinely believe they have the potential to eventually be at least an Everton, possibly among the top 6. They're a widely supported club, consistently sell out a 60,000 seater stadium, and would almost certainly attract some form of investment.

Groups have been drawn: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/aug/24/champions-league-draw-

I'm happy with Liverpool's draw. I actually think we're the best team in the group, which is weird considering we were in Pot 3. Sevilla are good and Spartak won't be walkovers, but we should be looking to top that group. Tottenham got a tough draw; I can't see them qualifying. Celtic got a tough group, but really they were never looking to qualify. 3rd is what they'd be aiming for and I would say they're equal, if not a little ahead, of Anderlecht. I like their chances of falling into the Europa League.

Here's a random thought when I read this thread title, I remember when Nottingham Forest qualified for Europe. That was '94 to '95, they got to the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Cup according to Wikipedia.

If time is infinite, then there's a good chance they will.

Yeah, even though I wasn't born during the glory years, it's strange to see a club with the pedigree of Nottingham Forest out of the top division. I'd like to see them promoted again.

Here's the Europa League Group Stage draw.

It's pretty uninteresting, but I'll keep an eye on Rosenborg, Arsenal and Everton.

Not strictly Champions League news (although it was a result of their CL game), but Bayern have sacked Ancelotti. Defensible, but still early in the season and they aren't exactly doing terrible. It'll be interesting to see who they hire to replace him (unless Sagnol is more than an interim).

Not a great start for Liverpool in the CL. Two draws from two performances that really should have gotten the win. Not the end of the world, and a win in the next two games against Maribor would give us good position considering Sevilla & Moscow play each other, but it would have been nice to grab at least one win from the two draws.
