I wouldn't necessarily say it's dark, but I'd reccomend Sword Art Online even though it's not necessarily medieval, but it is a medieval video game. I'm really into medieval stuff and it probably ranks as my second favorite anime. Another one I'd reccomend is Code Geass, it's not medieval its more futuristic but there is some definitely some medieval inspiration in the series and it's another one of my favorites, third favorite to be exact. Those are two I'd highly reccomend, I'll be honest it's really hard to find really good medieval anime. I've been wanting something great for years, but I don't think there's a lot out there for that genre. I can't really get into Seven Deadly Sins, but I've heard good things about it.

Edit: One that I was watching for a while in the past was Record of Lodoss War. I never finished it, but it was all right. It's an older anime so the voice acting isn't the greatest, I'd say the story definitely was leading into a good direction. There were some cool characters in the series, moreso on the villains side. A teacher of mine in High School actually recommended it to me my senior year lol.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Kingdom is supposed to be really good, thing there's only a manga right now.

Though not sure if it's technically medieval think it's set in China way back.

Think it's meant to be fairly brutal and medieval'y, it ain't no kiddie fest anyway.

I'd probably suggest "Claymore" which is basically a more lighthearted version of Berserk. In that, while still mature and dark, isn't well...Berserk. It basically revolves around empowered female soldiers battling it against the beasts called Yoma in a fantasy world. I mean if you want a dark, medieval, action packed series with strong characters, this is it for you.

Most would suggest to read the manga and the good thing is, unlike Berserk, Claymore has actually completely finished. Personally, I'm not much of a fan of medieval series, including Claymore, but honestly if you want all the things you mentioned but not to the level of Berserk quality, Claymore may very well be your best bet.

Oh...awesome.

I might start properly reading it then, I like to have anime voices to place on characters.

Seems to be a really hyped up series among the manga community wonder why it only has one series with a 8.21 rating out of 10. Weird.

Is there anything I should know about the claymore anime before getting into it?

Is it really different from the manga? Filler? Japanese or English dub better? Is it completed or canceled? I hate starting a series that doesn't finish

Honestly, I wouldn't really recommend Claymore to anyone. Having read Claymore I was initially interested, sure the characters were beaten with the uncanny valley bat, because the artist wasn't all that good with drawing humans. But it was sort of unique and during then Clare was actually kind of a badass, then the author proceeded to screw it all up by making the Awakened Yoma, and they just completely make the regular Yoma meaningless, heck the Awakened Yoma where everywhere as well, it was practically worthless being an awakened Yoma.

Eventually the characters jump in power become ridiculous, Clare went from being capable of being overwhelmed by a group of Yoma to being capable of taking on Awakened Yoma in about a week. Then he started throwing so many Characters against the wall, that I just lost interest in them, except ironically the Awakened Yoma who actually had designs that stand out.

And lets focus on the Awakened Yoma, seriously some of these guys had more personality then the entirety of the Claymores themselves who just got boring, and the sub plots, he crammed in so many sub plots into it that eventually I didn't even know what the hell I was reading anymore.

Even Clare after-while just lose all of her personality and became a boring, overpowered character. All of these combined made me stop caring about the story anymore.

Yeah I've heard pretty good things about Claymore, my brother said it was pretty good even though the main character was a female. I'm not being sexist, I'm saying that he normally doesn't like anime where the main character is a woman.

I'm a little like that too. I'm not being sexist it's just that it's harder to pull off woman characters so I'm always a little hesitant to watch something where the main character is a woman

I saw the first episode and she seems cool though. I like the atmosphere in this series. Might keep watching

Agreed, I prefer male main characters because it's easier to relate with them. There's tons of anime with male main characters, so an occasional female main character I can stand.

I don't think it's really harder to pull them off people just don't try

"Ok let's make a compelling, interesting female character with decent goals and a good personality...hmm, nah, BOOBIES ALL DAY SON"

Seems to be the average thought process for "I'm making a female character" for most anime/manga.

Another reason why Berserk is great 'cause not one female is like that. hint hint

Drifters probably counts I guess? I haven't watched it myself but it's old time war-ness.
Bunch of famous warriors fighting together, Oda Nobunaga is one I think.
Done by the people that did Hellsing so the animation is excellent.

Still need to watch that...

There's also Arslan Senki/Heroic Prince of Arslan.

Not sure if it's any good but it's by the author who did Full Metal Alchemist.

Why no Berserk?

Claymore, like others have said. I used to really love it. Haven't finished the manga though. Or Kingdom. It's apparently a masterpiece, but I haven't given it a read yet. Vinland Saga is a manga about vikings, and it's honestly one of the best manga I've ever read. I don't think it has an anime though. Ubel Blatt is similar to Berserk but has mixed reviews. Wolfsmund is a manga made by one of the assistants of Berserk, and it's similar, but I also don't know that it has an anime.

Not really "medieval," but you could also try Vagabond or Blade of the Immortal. They're both historical samurai series.

I like Pokémon

If you want something a bit more modern, Drifters was 2 seasons ago and was a fantastic show in my opinion, from the same author as Hellsing.
