How feasible do you think it would be to give the FA Cup winner, and only the winner (forfeits back to 4th if winner already has a place), the 4th Champions League spot? A caveat I think would help: only a Premiership team can qualify for the spot. If a lower league team wins, the spot forfeits to the 4th placed team in the Premiership. It would definitely ignite interest in the competition among all Premiership teams, but it could quite possibly take away from the 'magic' of upsets as Premiership teams would be more likely to field strong elevens, as well as lower league teams feeling like they aren't fair treatment if they don't qualify for the winner's reward (the only reason I added that is because I couldn't see the Premiership teams agreeing to it, if they even would in the first place, without that caveat). Fantasy idea I guess, but what do you think? |

I think in a hypothetical scenario it would definitely reignite the passion for the FA cup, you just have to look at how seriously Manchester United took the Europa, with the qualification to the Champions league probably outweighing the prestige of actually winning a trophy, let alone a European one. I think the problem comes from UEFA, they would never allow it, at least I do not think there is a precedent for it anyway. If it was a widespread blanket change, with all competing football federations allocating a spot to the main domestic cup winner, it could make for some really interesting viewing, with loads of new teams appearing. |
