I wonder if Vegito tried using Goku's strategy against Hit and Vegeta's strategy against Black with using Red and then Blue when attacking, that his fusion would have lasted longer.
Vegetto didn't want to give Zamasu any time to retaliate. It was a bum rush from the start. Alternating Red and Blue would've taken too much time.

Yeah, I guess so, he really didn't need it since his speed in that form was far superior. I'm just wondering if he did if time would have lasted any or much longer.

Considering what happened with Vegeta, the same would apply to Vegetto. It just might not have been the best choice, for example, if Red was equal to Zamasu, so Vegetto would need to expend energy defending himself rather than simply stomping outright like he did.

I wouldn't go as far as to say Base Vegetto was above Merged Zamasu or even near him. If that was the case, he wouldn't need to go all the way up to Blue when regular Super Saiyan would be more than enough to stomp Zamasu, and the ki drain would be less. The only thing I took from Zamasu questioning Vegetto was that he genuinely wondered if Vegetto was a new transformation.
Vegito didn't know Zamasu's full power yet though, him going Blue just enforces he intended on not holding back. Besides, the reason my chain for their portrayal of power is currently like that cause I don't think we seen all of Zamasu's power yet.

Yeah, but why have Base Vegetto above this level of Zamasu when there's no indication of that being the case?

I believe that Ssj Vegetto could have probably be able to beat up Merged Zamasu, but he wouldn't have been able to destroy him due to his immortality.
To me Vegetto knew well that only by going full power SSB (Final Kamehameha) the gap between him and MZ would have been big enough to overcome even his immortality and thus literally atomize him, that's why he didn't even fool around with SSG, he went straight to Blue, stomped him to the ground and prepared to totally wipe him off.
Too bad that the power was so big that fusion didn't last, otherwise I believe that Vegetto was not bluffing and Merged Zamasu would have been completely wiped out.
