Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Why is it that people are allowed to come on to shows like Britain's Got Talent or X Factor where the public decide who wins and be like "Oh my mum has cancer so I'm hoping to win to pay for a life saving operation"

Is that not...cheating? I mean yeah, tragic if they're not lying but they basically secure sympathy votes with that and it becomes more of a battle of who people feel most sorry for.

Maybe I'm just mean spirited but I feel like that shouldn't really be allowed. People with that kind of an issue have GoFundMe and such to use now, not really fair that some people can go on and shed a few tears to win even if they are genuine.
Especially when there's multiple people with sob stories like that, as people basically have to dictate which is the most sad and tell the others to sod off, sorry kid your dying parents aren't interesting enough.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

It's because it's not really about the competition, and more about the entertainment value. It makes the show more interesting for the viewing public because they can get emotionally invested in those competing. As a general rule, if you had two people who were completely equal, except that one person had an average, no-thrills type of life, and the other had to overcome adversity e.g. dead relatives, illness etc, people will have a much bigger reaction to the latter. Humans love a good sob story.

"Then you've got the chance to do better next time."
"Next time?"
"Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is."
