Washington (CNN)The US military has dropped an enormous bomb in Afghanistan, according to four US military officials with direct knowledge of the mission.

A GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB), nicknamed the "mother of all bombs," was dropped at 7:32 pm local time Thursday, the sources said. A MOAB is a 21,600-pound, GPS-guided munition that is America's most powerful non-nuclear bomb.
The bomb was dropped by an MC-130 aircraft, stationed in Afghanistan and operated by Air Force Special Operations Command, Pentagon spokesman Adam Stump told CNN.

The United States takes the fight against ISIS very seriously and in order to defeat the group we must deny them operational space, which we did," White House press secretary Sean Spicer said later Thursday. The strike "targeted a system of tunnels and cave that ISIS fighters use to move around freely

Since it doesn't say in that little blurb.....

The M.O.A.B. has an explosive yield equivalent to eleven tons of TNT. This bomb is not intended for use against hardened targets, just for large numbers of soft to medium targets. It is detonated while it is still airborne, hence the "Air Blast" part of the name.

You ever hear the cliche of using a sledgehammer to kill a misquito? This is the Sledgehammer.

Flashy Thing!

President Trump just wants to be able to say "no one has dropped a bomb as big as I have" in one of his speeches.

He'd still technically be wrong. Hiroshima and Nagasaki got it worse

I mean they dropped it on ISIS so shouldn't people be happy about this? We should be bombing the hell out of ISIS whenever we can. It was overkill but we need to let them know we're not f***ing around anymore and we're tired of their s***

Thing is, is the U.S. trying to destroy ISIS or are they just flexing their muscles towards North Korea?

I mean, a 16 million dollar bomb for 36 ISIS f***ers? That's 444,000$ for 1 ISIS guy. Nice to see him dead, but if I was an American taxpayer I would question if that's money efficiently spent.

Overkill doesn't help with that, though. Even if they lose almost 50 fighters, they know that the US are wasting a disproportionate amount of money just to have a small impact like that. It also likely helps with all sorts of propaganda.

That's putting it midly.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Yeah and Trump had the gall to say the military is underfunded...

I'm sure all the homeless people in the streets and the sick not being cared for are super sad that they can only afford to launch one $16 mil bomb just to show off the armies manhood.

I'm just looking forward to people still trying to maintain that Obama was an evil war mongoring President whilst ignoring all the things Trump will probably continue to do.
"Trump nuked North Korea!"
"Obama's drones tho! DRONES!"

Anyway yeah not sure why this is such big news but it's mildly disturbing how glorified the action is.

Russia has apparently retaliated by blowing up an even bigger bomb:

Is that what we're doing now...

Apparently it killed 82 ISIS fighters which is great but yeah I wasn't thinking about how much the bomb costs. $16 million for 82 guys? That's a bit ridiculous. I think they probably went over the top to show off to North Korea

What a shame. Always spending s*** tons of money on this stuff. $16 million? Really?
