I recall, a while back, reading the manga and noticing that characters would often acknowledge several types of power differences. I'll discuss what I found and how I would use it to scale power. Feel free to respond. no stated nor significant difference No significant difference in power. This is not to say that exact numbers won't differ; though, the difference is inconsequential. For example, just before fighting Raditz, Son Goku and Piccolo's readings (334, 322; 416, 408) were practically identical. As Son Goku confronts Jheese and Butta, Clearin mentions the latters' powers pretty close to Recoome's. When Cell arrives to absorb #17 and #18, #16 states his own power equal to Cell's. noted difference A power difference acknowledged or implied by characters, but not made to be a critical difference. For one example, while Piccolo fought Freeza on Namek, Clearin states that both were equal; Vegeta corrects him, claiming Piccolo stronger. Another Namek example: Vegeta, Clearin, and Son Gohan have the Dragon Balls and Vegeta insists on wishing for immortality as their only hope to defeat Freeza; Clearin suggests to use the wish on Son Gohan instead, as Gohan's power was almost as great as Vegeta; Vegeta affirms Son Gohan's power but denies his skill, iirc. One final example occurs as Vegeta dominates second-form Cell; before Vegeta decides that he was done with Cell, the former states that Future Trunks was almost as strong as he was implying that even Trunks could have easily defeated Cell. definite difference A definitive (not questionable) difference in power, implied to be critical but not clearly an insurmountable advantage. There seem few statements or showings of power that clearly confirm whether or not a power difference is situationally critical. One instance that I place with higher confidence is Vegeta's initial grapple with first-form Freeza; this obviously is a clear showing in power rather than style or technique. Although Vegeta is able to match Freeza, the former is visibly the lesser of the two; Freeza seems unfazed. One other statement I mention, albeit with less confidence, is #16's initial assessment of Cell's perfect form compared to Vegeta; stating that Vegeta was still superior in every aspect. Compare this statement to #16's previous statement of Piccolo's Ginger Town power rivaling #17 and #18's. To me, it seems that, in terms of power, #16 claims Vegeta the advantage over Cell, rather than just stating that there is a power difference. large difference An unarguably advantageous, often insurmountable, power difference. No contest. Even advantages in style, skill, or condition rarely compensate for the difference. This is the final catch-all for differences that are stated to be excessively great. There are unsurprisingly many instances of these kind in the manga; a few that seem to be smaller than others are Vegeta's Zenkai attained from Zarbon and Zarbon's transformation. Vegeta against second-form Cell was also an unquestionably large difference in power. To contrast greatly, the difference in power where Clearin attacked Cell after the latter attained #18 is also quite large; also, when Mr. Satan fought #18. Lastly, I often use 1.25 as the smallest large power difference. So a noted power difference is ∛(1.25), and a definite difference is ∛(1.25)2. Here is a table, because tables and I'm tired.
