I fear the neocons are winning.

EDIT: For those who don't want to watch the video. US has fired over 50 tomahawk missiles at Syrian airbases. Trump will be addressing the nation soon.

This has been discussed a bit on the discord servers actually but I'll see if I can get attention so it can continue here;

On topic, I am not surprised by any of this info. This was a targeted overkill of the base that deployed chemical weapons recently. This will galvanize. But I am unsure how it will galvanize exactly.

Seem to notice that the GOP in Congress are largely gagging for military action now that they have the Presidency, as they stopped Obama from taking military action in Syria in several cases, iirc.

It won't stop at just these bases, there's probably going to be a full campaign.

I have mixed emotions on this. I did see the chemical weapons attack and I was horrified. So was my mother. A man was begging Trump to do something, and he actually did something. What the west CANNOT do is turn the scumbag that is Bashar al-Assad into a martyr. You are also correct about destabilizing the Syrian government. Assad needs ousting but who will replace him that won't just crumble like the Iraqi government did after we left? Only time will tell, but yes, I do believe that is probably true when you say "the war has just begun".

Assad disgusts me, but the west cannot get involved. Putin seems to have known about the strike beforehand and said that his ties to Assad were not unconditional. I have to imagine Putin was disturbed by the chemical weapons use as well if he was alright with this attack. But I'm merely speculating. We don't know enough yet and this news is titanic.

I heard the news driving. It made it sound like a U.S. invasion on the radio. Missiles are still a problem. Honestly, whatever Trump says I probably won't listen to it regardless, but still. We'll see how this unfolds.

Wait did that target government facilities? Because that's a big f***ing problem if it is. I'm not going to get in to the congressional approval argument because I honestly don't know the scope of powers that have been delegated to the President for stuff like this. But this is a clear breach of international law. It is illegal to attack a sovereign nation except in two circumstances: self-defence and with the authorisation of the UN Security Council. This is obviously not self-defence and there is no SC resolution to authorise an attack.

The time for military intervention in Syria against the government has probably passed now. There was a window early in the war where it might have been possible but that was hampered by Russia and China repeatedly using their veto in the UN to prevent any action. There's way too many different actors there now and it's too complex to know what to even do. What happens now if they topple Assad? Who takes over? Half of his opposition are just as bad as him now, any moderate rebels are now the minority. The whole thing is a mess and it'll take a generation to fix it. Launching random attacks like this is beyond stupid.

It was just hard to know who had control of that air base because the various rebels groups have pockets of their own. In any case having read more this is clearly an attack against Assad's base. Though apparently Russia had advanced warning so this might all just be an attempt at political posturing but we'll see.

Russia had to be told because technically speaking Russia and US are not enemies in this war and so a token effort not to kill nonhostile military forces must be provided. That is standard in the rules of engagement, I think.

I may not deserve to live, but I will protect those in my reach with my reverse blade!

Really glad to hear the media, including left wing like CNN agree with the decision the president and his administration made.

Also glad to hear our friends such as UK, France, Israel, etc agreed with the decision and gives green light for further aggression if needed.

Should have been done during Obama administration but Congress shut him down. Better late than never. No children or humans in general deserve to have your own government perform attacks of mass destruction on them.

Well, Putin's actually angry about this. I wasn't sure if he would be or not, I guess I'm not surprised but this adds a lot more uncertainty to the situation.

Of course he is mad he is the political power that has told Assad Russia will have their back no matter what. Assad and Syria only did this because they knew Russia would support them. The conflict in Syria supports Russia and Iran's end game to have a person in power in Syria that they can control.

After Syria committed the chemical weapons attacks on their own people Russia asked the USA to not act out of anger. Sorry Russia but screw you. Seven years late or not stop supporting a government that is killing innocent children under false pretenses of terrorism.

--

As a note what is going on in Syria shouldn't be a political issue to anyone. It should be a humanitarian one. I wonder if people not in Syria would think US shouldn't get involved if it was their family being gassed to death on the streets instead of people they don't know who have been begging for help for years. Obviously US isn't clean of this as we are acting late and are still not fully accepting refugees, but this is a step in the right direction.

I'm sure most titles are overly sensationalizing this but still, quite serious.

Really though, can we not? Can we just not?

If only we could put world leaders in a VR simulation (without their knowledge) of the world being destroyed by nukes and then ask them if it was worth it.

I'm not so certain the VR simulation would work because that is dependant on the leader in question to not look at all the devastation and not believe it was worth it. I simply don't have enough trust in believing enough (or even most) leaders wouldn't believe it was worth the nukes.
