The Lord of the Dark

There's been some talk about it ever since the somewhat successful "Predators" movie:

http://www.darkhorizons.com/rodriguez-pursues-predators-sequel/

Quote:

With "Predators" doing good business at the box-office, producer Robert Rodriguez tells IGN today a sequel is likely.

"[The studio] said, 'Let's do some other ones. What other story ideas do you have?'. Because it was like, let's test out the market with this one. They really wanted it to be pretty contained, pretty scaled-back. They didn't want to put too many of the ideas into it that we could save for a second one. So we could see what the appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes following that. That kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and world, and then you can really go crazy from there" he said.

Rodriguez added that he has "an idea" of what he will do with the sequel and so the next step is for other writers to come in and pitch different versions of his premise and some new concepts. Would he direct? "I don't know. I think I have too many people wanting me to do Sin City 2 first!"

And although Arnold and producer John Davis wanted the series to rest...

Quote:

Collider: You started with Predator and I really dug the reboot you did with Robert Rodriguez. How successful was that for the studio in terms of maybe making another one?

John Davis: You know, those Predator movies…Tom Rothman said this to me, “Man, they all seem to make money.” I get a big check every year on my net points off of the original Predator. You know how hard it is to get net points on a studio movie, right? It was hugely profitable. It far exceeded its revenue on DVD than in theaters by three or four times.

You’re talking about the original, right?

Davis: Yes. I talked to Arnold about rebooting Predator and doing something in terms of that. I think in terms of right now, it needs to rest for a couple of years. I can’t see why if we can’t be clever we can’t reinvent it again.

I actually really dug it. I thought Rodriguez did a great job with it.

Davis: Yeah. It was really fun.

It was really good. That’s why as a fan I’d love to see another one.

Davis: Yeah. He changed the setting. He put it on another planet. You have to keep changing the setting. You have to find a clever way to do it. If we were going to do it with Arnold; it was like, “Does it make sense to go back and to put him with a young team?” So maybe it’s 20 years later, you have retired, and you are the one person who has survived one of these encounters. Is that a reboot in the fact that you are in it with a group of young guys? Is that a reboot? You just have to figure out a way to reboot it. Rodriguez rebooted it. It’s all in the planet. The sequel to the first one rebooted it. We should’ve had Arnold in the movie. The deal broke down over $250,000, which is a shame. But it was moved from the jungle to the city. You have to create a freshness about it. When we did Alien vs. Predator we kind of rebooted it because we put the two pieces together. You just have to give it enough time to come up with a new freshness. It is what they did so brilliantly with Fast Five.

...Fox had different plans, and so did director Shane Black.

Eighties action classic Predator is getting the reboot treatment from Twentieth Century Fox.

But before some purists cry fowl, however, they should know that this reboot comes with an in interesting attachment: Shane Black, the venerable screenwriter behind Lethal Weapon and writer-director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3.

Black will write the treatment for the project, then will hand over scripting duties to Fred Dekker, his university chum with whom he wrote 1987’s Monster Squad. Black will oversee the writing and is also attached to direct.

John Davis, who produced the original with Joel Silver and Lawrence Gordon, is producing the reboot.

Predator is the muscle-bound action 1987 movie that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as well as Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura as commandos being stalked in a jungle by a fearsome alien. John McTiernan directed the film, which was one of the movies that cemented Schwarzenegger’s star power.

Black actually appeared in a minor role in the original movie and how be became involved is part of Hollywood lore.

When Predator was being made in 1986, Black was already a screenwriting prodigy for his Lethal Weapon and Monster Squad scripts. The studio and producers wanted him to polish the script for Predator, which was then in pre-production. Black turned it down. A few weeks later, they approached him again. Once more, Black said no. Another few weeks went by, and then the studio called again. This time, however, he was told there was a small role in the movie and whether he would like to have it. Black said yes.

When he arrived to the South American set, the studio execs and producers greeted him and said, "By the way, would you mind taking a look at the script?" Black replied, "I’m still not rewriting it."

Fox has found ways to keep Predator alive since it's initial outing. There was a Schwarzenegger-less sequel, Predators, in 1990. Robert Rodriguez produced an installment of the franchise in 2010. Fox also combined it with its Alien franchise for a couple of Alien vs. Predator movie released in 2004 and 2007, respectively.

Fox exec Matt Reilly is overseeing the reboot. Davis Entertainment's Ira Napoliello is also overseeing.

Do not worry, it's not yet another reboot among so many lately, but a sequel.

http://collider.com/predator-reboot-sequel-shane-black/

Quote:

Black tells us that he and Dekker see the project as definitely not a reboot, “As far as Fred and I are concerned anyway,” Black said, adding “Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?” Black said he doesn’t like reboots generally, but can “really get behind inventive sequels”, noting that he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.” He went on to say that Dekker, who’s writing the screenplay, is “perfect” for the project, adding the two had a blast writing the screenplay for The Monster Squad together.

According to the producer (John Davis as mentioned above), this new movie will reinvent the franchise.

By the end of 2015, they had already completed the script.

Good to know the classic design hasn't been altered (take notes, Marvel). Or at least, we hope so, since that picture is from the "Predators" movie.

It's scheduled for March 2, 2018.

http://www.joblo.com/horror-movies/news/alien-covenant-moves-to-summer-2017-the-predator-dated-for-2018-192

And Arnie may be more involved than we think...

http://www.joblo.com/horror-movies/news/schwarzenegger-is-going-to-meet-with-shane-black-about-the-predator-644

...And Shane Black is keeping a lot of his script in secret.

For some reason, rapper 50 cent is going to star in this movie.

http://ihorror.com/50-cent-teases-starring-role-predator/

The movie's set in the present day.

Fred Dekker is also co-writing the script.

So yeah, we've got the Monster Squad duo working on this movie. Quite exciting actually.

Shane Black wants to change things up a bit, for the better at least.

https://hellhorror.com/article/9777/PREDATOR-Getting-Technology-Visual-Upgrades-in-PREDATOR-Sequel.html

...And Stan Winston was supposedly working in it? The news guy probably messed up, because Stan's been dead since 2008, unfortunately.

Anyway, Benicio del Toro was supposedly going to be part of the movie, but he's out.

http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/188614/benicio-del-toro-circling-predator/

Instead of Benicio we get Boyd Holbrook.

http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/198660/olivia-munn-beat-off-predator/

Apparently, this short guy is the one who's going to play the Predator in this movie.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/77005

Personally, I think anyone over 190 cm is good for Predators, but below that, they don't seem too intimidating. Unless it's a young one.
Also, the link shows a few more actors that will be in the movie.

And more.

And more!

http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3422206/thomas-jane-talks-battle-predator/

Jacob Tremblay joins the cast as an autistic boy with a savant way of translating languages.

More actors.

http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/215631/yvonne-strahovski-boards-predator/

And the possible main star of the whole movie...

tl;dr - We're getting a new movie with our beloved Predator, boys.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Hmmm...

Mixed feelings.

I hope it's actually new and not just elements from the original basically making pretty much the same movie again.

We need to have the series move forward instead of repeating constantly.

I want Arnie to be in it and be leading or at least have tutored a squad of soldiers on how the Predators work.
Predator on human conflict where the humans know what they're up against would be a nice change of pace.

I'll find it super hard to get excited for another movie where people in a military group get fodderized until a final epic showdown with the main guy of the group after most everyone else is dead.
As cool as it is it's a pretty tired formula now.
Especially since Alien is basically the same thing but in space.

Given the two main writers working on this, I can assure you all that this will be a fun flick. The Monster Squad is a classic though they're certainly taking this more seriously than that, as they should.

I honestly wouldn't mind so long as it was still a decent movie.

I actually quite liked AVP and then they tried to make it super dark with literally no connection to the first and filled it with teenagers which was sad to watch.
Pick one tone dammit. And keep kids the f*** out of it, they never improve horror unless they're demonic critters.

I'll be happy with something close to the tone of Predators but a bit less grim, it tried a bit too hard on that end.
Half way between that and the original seems ideal. Action horror with some slight classic campyness, hell yeah.

Sometimes they work, even when they're not supernatural. In the case of zombie franchises, for example.
Or heck, the kids from IT were the ones who made it (heh) interesting, besides the fat alien killer clown.

I'm cautious about this new Predator movie, because I feel that Iron Man 3 is not something Shane Black should be proud of.

"No, I am the Predator!"

"Wait what, the Predator is just a guy in a suit and not some big alien monster?"

@Toji

I don't see where it says that Shane was proud of it in any of the links I posted.
And even then, it's his movie. Maybe it's one of those "no one understands how great my movie is except for me" cases. Personally it's hard for me to enjoy a MCU movie. Well done as they may be, they take far too many unnecessary liberties, plus include stuff from universes absolutely NO ONE likes, but that's a discussion for another day.

Aside from Edge, The Nice Guys was well recieved by most, and that's pure action stuff, where he truly is at his best. He's a good writer too, so I expect good from him in a movie where he should do little to no wrong, especially when joined with his buddy Fred Dekker.

Hopefully wise enough to actually entertain people instead of just making Predator again anyway.

Reboots, remakes and whatnot are annoying like that, they don't really offer a new experience and then they end up flopping and the universe has to be rebooted/remade yet again years later.

Like with Halloween, though that was just a terrible remake in general.

It'd be nice for movie makers to not always have to start at the beginning, when it's been seen many times already.

Hopefully we get to see the Predator's planet in a movie some day. Though I feel like that'd be more attainable in the AVP verse, since they could borrow space craft from the Alien side of it.

Yeah, Rob Zombie's Halloween isn't exactly the best example.

Out of all the recent horror remakes Michael Bay dared to touch, the 2009 Friday the 13th was the only decent one.

Trailer dropped:

Looks...really quite meh, I hope that's just a trailer thing.

When a trailer for an MCU movie is more dark and gritty than a should-be R rated horror-action film there's a problem.

I really hope the Predator feels threatening here, so many villains have become near worthless.
The Terminator killed a whole station of cops and like 20+ other people in the first film. Just one single nigh unstoppable machine with a mission.
And then in Genisys like basically nobody gets killed, only Terminators get destroyed.

I feel like this movie could be similar, with less dumb humour maybe.

Like clearly some generic SWAT guys or whatever get killed there but if it's only going to be faceless fodder that gets murked it hardly adds anything.

Also I assume that kid activated a beacon, when are movies going to stop making kids ruin everything? It's always some stupid kid even though an adult would pick that thing up and be like "What the f*** is this?" anyway.

Oh god I am so glad the Predator isn't a CGI monstrosity... Finally, practical effects and a guy in a suit, I'm happy to see that art is not dead.
