Dutch elections were yesterday, they're now over. Here are the results, they are not final yet, there might be a few very small changes, parties may lose or gain 1 zetel. For those who don't know, our parliament consists of 150 zetels (seats), if 1/150 Dutch voters voted for your party, you get a zetel in parliament, parties now have to make a coalition consisting of at least 76 zetels, they will be the governing body of our country, the remaining zetels are the opposition and have a controlling function in parliament. VVD - 33 zetels (current PM Mark Rutte) PVV - 20 zetels (infamous Geert Wilders) CDA - 19 zetels D66 - 19 zetels (my favorites) SP - 14 zetels GroenLinks - 14 zetels PvdA - 9 zetels CU - 5 zetels PvdD - 5 zetels 50+ - 4 zetels SGP - 3 zetels DENK - 3 zetels FvD - 2 zetels Other parties (most notably VNL, Artikel 1 and PiratenPartij) - 0 zetels There are a few likely coalitions, the first most likely coalition is VVD-CDA-D66-CU. This would be a right-wing government where the biggest issue will probably be between the progressive D66 and a very Christian CU. Issues such as euthanasia is something these parties will disagree on where CDA and CU will be very conservative and VVD and D66 will probably be a lot more liberal. Second are VVD-CDA-D66 with a large left-wing party. Most likely GroenLinks but possibly PvdA. The biggest issue here will be between the left-wing party and the right-wing VVD. GroenLinks would make it a very large majority coalition, which is always a very good thing, but this would mean a green party and a right-wing conservative party have to work together. PvdA is a centre left-wing party and fits better with the other 3. But the PvdA did horrible this election, they went from 38 zetels to 9 because of the alliance between them and VVD, the PvdA will probably not want to work again in a right-wing coalition. Third and least likely option would be a left-wing government. D66-SP-GroenLinks-PvdA-PvdD would be the first 5 parties to be named, Unfortunately them together only have 61 zetels. So they need a very large party to join them, only option here is CDA. CDA will probably not like this idea though as they would prefer an easier right-wing alliance. For this to happen the talks between VVD, CDA and D66 would have to go horribly. PVV will not govern. The only parties that stated to have it as an option to work with Wilders are 50+, FvD, SGP and VNL. They together have 29 zetels. Not quite the 76 that are necessary. Coalitions from most likely to least likely: 1. VVD - CDA - D66 - CU 2. VVD - CDA - D66 - GroenLinks 3. VVD - CDA - D66 - PvdA (my favorite) 4. CDA - D66 - SP - GroenLinks - PvdA - PvdD (This is a six party coalition, almost ridiculous to suggest, but with these weird elections it might just happen) 5. Another coalition |

I do like the variety in a lot of European parliaments, it forces compromise which is a good thing. Also get f***ed Wilders, always nice to see a***** like him underperform at the polls. Gives me some vague hope that the world hasn't completely lost its mind over the last year. |

Well luckily we have this system that basically allows the established parties to f*** over populists such as Wilders. The PVV just got completely boycotted. It's amazing for me to see how a right-wing conservative party seriously considers working together with a left-wing green party and not with a right-wing populist one. It's not like the established parties had any chance anyway, VVD gained a ton of votes simply by being specifically anti-PVV. To say you want to work with the PVV right now is political suicide unless you're a small party. PVV will still be a large party in the opposition, which is exactly what they need to be. I hate to admit Wilders says some good stuff sometimes, but they're way too incompetent to govern. |
