I'm curious, The US is massively large for entertainment - music, media, movies, film, etc. We have what's called cable TV (among others) I'm not sure if that is a relative term worldwide? But anyways, on Cable it is primarily American stuff. We don't have Canadian soap operas or English reality shows, etc.. So I'm curious on how much American stuff is on foreign television? Like is there a news channel strictly for America? CNN, Fox, NBC? Are there any TV shows that are American? Like American soar operas, or reality tv shows, or Con Air is on AMC right now, is that similar worldwide? I'm really ignorant of this stuff so I'm curious on how pronounced American television is on a global basis? Or if it's similar to how it is here and there's only stuff (for the most part) relative to your country. If I'm missing anything else feel free to add Edited by Political Piper, Feb 28 2017, 11:56 PM.

Actually you had quite a few Canadian shows on American airways. Well, the Northern states at least. Ever watched: The Red Green Show? How about Corner Gas? Little Mosque On The Prairie? Any show with Degrassi in the name? Up here in Canada, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council controls the programming demands of all Canadian cable channels. The general rule is, at least 30% of all programming on a given Canadian channel must be Canadian-made, regardless of the actual programming content. This also included any advertisements, which caused a hit of a discussion when it came to the Super Bowl because there was something of a standing order to override Super Bowl commercials with a Canadian ad instead of an ad that would only be for services and goods available in America. They since have repealed that as part of tje broadcast so Canadians get the Super Bowl ads now. |

The only true Canadian TV I have seen in the US is Trailer Park Boys, and I am very close to Canada. We get a ton of Canadian radio stations, though. |

I've heard of Degrassi but that's about it. So for shows like the Walking Dead that has a new episode every Sunday on AMC, would you be able to watch that? Or since it's not party of the 30% you won't have that on cable and you have to watch it online? |

Oh yes, we can get AMC just fine. The restrictions I mentioned only apply to Canadian cable channels. But AMC is generally only available through sattelite TV in my immediate area and that has a few loopholes around it. If it is an American channel, the 30% rule is not neccessarily used, especially if it is a specialty channel. But any Canadian specialty channel (like YTV or Space) is under the umbrella of the rule. |

We have very few channels from the US here. Most TVs I've watched (it varies) keep a relatively small amount of foreign channels, but we have a larger amount of foreign tv shows, even if they are shown elsewhere. One TV might have Fox, but The Simpsons might show up in more than one channel. It's interesting really. |

Here in the UK I think the most popular version of cable is called Sky, there are others but it's been years since I owned one so not sure what's actually most popular. Basically the same thing anyway. Otherwise we have a lot of US shows, loads of crime drama, documentaries and I think stuff like MTV is still going...not that it's about music these days. And then the obvious most popular stuff like Walking Dead...a week later usually, which is s***ty. There's usually reruns of old sitcoms and comedy panel shows too. So yeah there's a pretty broad section of US entertainment I'd say, enough that there's not usually any select "US channel" that only plays media from there. Bits and pieces all over. Except for porn and music Indian and religious radio typically but nothing specifically American to my knowledge.

Australia - American media dominates everything else. I think the only place it doesn't completely is in music: there's still loads of it but there's a fair bit of Australian music on the airwaves now. |

Yeah, I'm from the UK like Steve and there's a bunch of American programs on British TV. I'd say American TV is probably more popular than British TV, except maybe among those in their 50s and up. Everyone seems to be moving to thing like Netflix and Amazon Prime video now too, or just downloading, which is mostly American made. Like Copy, I'd say that music is the media where things are closer, or where British music has a slight edge. But American artists are still in abundance. |

Yeah I was under the impression that American media was very prevalent in the UK and Australia. Canada I can't remember, I used to go there a lot. I live on a border state. |

NZ is much the same. There is a prevalence of foreign (US / UK) shows, with US being the majority. However we do still have a selection of local stuff. We just aren't a big enough country to have too much of that though. |

Another Brit here: Instead of Cable we have "satellite" television, basically a subscription TV service. There are a few providers with SKY being the main one, which I believe is owned by Rupert Murdoch of FOX fame. There are various channels, most of which focus on UK stuff, but we get all the big US shows as well. One channel named "Sky Atlantic" shows basically all the HBO stuff, which is nice. We have UK versions of most US channels as well, (CNN, FOX, SPIKE, Comedy Central) which either show mostly US stuff, with a drop of original UK content, or some times a lot of garbage movies that you haven't seen in a long tim as it's a new channel lol. |
