This is going to be a weird post. If you don't want to read about my strange s***, skip the majority of this post. :P How do you go about conquering bad habits like the ones listed in the title? You hear about people biting their nails all the time, and they never seem to stop. Have you managed to get rid of a bad habit like this? If so, how? If not, how do you think that someone could overcome it? My problem is strange. I used to not care about my eyebrows at all, but now I pluck at them constantly. It started out normal--I would pluck them whenever they got really bad. Then I would transition to plucking them more frequently. Then weekly. Then a few times a week. Then daily. And now I pluck them throughout the day with either just my fingers (totally blind) or with tweezers (usually by feeling around, but barely ever using a mirror anymore, which is the epitome of pluck-obsession). It's not something that I do purposefully. I'm not like "oh, I need to pluck my eyebrows. Be right back." It's totally subconscious at first, like it's a usual thing. And once I realize that I'm doing it, I can't stop because I start to feel something bumpy or slightly irregular and cannot stop until that feeling goes away. I've had several small wounds because of this from the constant plucking and picking at skin. If anything feels off, I'm off. I know, I know, it's weird. I asked my doctor about it the last time I was there, and she just said "oh, it just sounds like an OCD habit." I don't think she's that concerned about it. I'm not either, really. I could be doing much worse things to my body. But at the same time, there's this: (Beware: awkward photos) Me a few months ago: Spoiler: click to toggle Me now: Spoiler: click to toggle Any sane person would say, "I look like s***, I need to stop." But I've tried stopping and it's hard for some reason. It's like biting your nails. If you feel like something's off, you can't stop until it's fixed. Now obviously I wouldn't call this "fixing" since my eyebrow obviously looks like s***, but it's the same mentality. If I feel a bump or the start of a hair, I can't stop until it's gone. It's the most bizarre thing ever. Any advice? |

Do you live with anyone? Maybe you can tell them about your habit and ask them to stop you if they see you doing it?

I've actually been wanting to stop a weird/bad habit (cracking/clicking joints), so I know the frustration. I haven't made any headway yet because like you said, a lot of it is subconscious so I only catch myself doing it when it's done, and then it's too late to not do it. The only advice I can give is that it's going to come down to willpower, namely sitting with those feelings that you feel you can't get rid of without plucking your eyebrows. You have to test yourself and see how long you can sit with them. Even if initially that's only 5 minutes, just try and keep putting it off until you genuinely can not stand it anymore. It's not something that can be done overnight because the longer, and more frequently, that you've been doing it, the more your brain settles into the routine and habit of it. That being said, like I mentioned, I've struggled with curbing my joint cracking, so I know how hard it can be to snap out of something you've done so much you seemingly have no control over. |

"Then you've got the chance to do better next time." "Next time?" "Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is." | |

grab a journal or some s*** and write down any thoughts you have whenever you realise youre doing it. idk if this will help but maybe it's like a response to stress or some s*** so there's no harm in figuring out that part also maybe the next time you get the urge, try to replace it with a different habit like how ex smokers i know drink more tea or chew a lot of gum or whatever the f*** else. it'll build another habit but i guess it'll be less destructive or whatever the f*** innit. |

My family members do try to stop me when they see it, but since I'm not around them all the time, it doesn't really have much of an effect. I'll try sitting with it. I've tried that in the past and ended up giving up after a short time, but that seems to be the only solution. I guess I could journal about how much my life sucks like I used to, but then my mommy would read it...

Honestly, the best solution is to just fight the urge, plain and simple, as far as I'm concerned. It's good for you. |

I find it comes in a few steps, breaking habits. I'm really bad for biting my nails/the skin around the top of my fingers. The first part is to actively notice when you're performing the habit. IE are you nervous/really busy/working hard etc. Once you narrow down what activity you associate with the habit, it becomes easier to notice you're doing it and then try to stop. The second part is the "trying to stop" part, which can be hard to do, but the active thinking from part 1 is the more important part. I've just about kicked my habit after a week of really thinking "what am I doing, put the hand down" and luckily my finger nails/skin are showing real improvement
