There is no intention in the story itself for Mecha arc Trunks to be any different than Android arc Trunks. They are treated exactly the same power wise by all characters.

Vegeta tried to lose Trunks via speed while they were looking for Gero's lab and he couldn't. That would be utterly pathetic on Vegeta's part if Trunks is still the same as he was three years prior.

It was 8 months, if I remember correctly since that's how long it takes to gather fuel for the time machine. Vegeta not losing Trunks says nothing from a narrative standpoint. It was already established that Vegeta's capabilities were greater than Trunks', so we already have a case of a stronger character not completely outpacing a weaker character in pure speed. It doesn't mean anything. The intention of that scene wasn't to show any "improvement" on Trunks' part.

Trunks: “You were right… The gap between me and the androids was still huge…I think I’m lucky to have returned alive…” Later in the androids' arc: Chapter: 355 (DBZ 161), P8.5 Trunks: “They’re also somewhat different from the androids I know…They weren’t as outrageously strong as this…Even I could fight them fairly well…” Not to mention androids saga Trunks being lumped together with a 3 years trained Goku and Vegeta, while at Mecha saga, Trunks was visibly weaker than Goku, let alone a 3 years trained one. Later on, at Mirai #17 and #18's defeat, it's said the time machine takes 3 years to be ready for another time trip, so the amount of time Trunks spent in the future until the androids saga in the present isn't set either: Even if it were only 8 months, it doesn't get in the way of Trunks being way stronger. He could fight them "fairly well" compared to the ones that one shotted him. Those 2 statements don't clash in any way and the narrative doesn't hint at Trunks being much stronger in the Android arc if any at all. Mecha arc Trunks is the same as Android arc Trunks.
