Is Super really intended for a younger audience?

I've ponder this question for a long time as many people claim Super is made for a younger audience but it is possible considering GT was also intended for a younger audience than Dragon Ball or DBZ. The difference here is GT was made during a horrible time for the Japanese anime industry when anime was pandering towards children and "otakus" while Super is made when Japanese censorship had gotten stricter and the show airs on Sunday mornings instead of Wednesday nights.

Other examples would be the violence is significantly tone down from the original series (which had blood, gore, and even decapitation), the stories are much more within Toriyama's comfort zone, and as far as I can tell there's no heavy-hitting themes explored thus far (the original series dealt with racism, nurture vs. nature, and redemption). There also seems to be a stronger emphasis on comedy (particularly the anime) than the original which was mostly serious from the Piccolo Daimao arc and following.

Now what do y'all think?

My Dear Melancholy,

It's made for fans of Dragonball, the younger audience (since that's DB target audience anyways), and to whoever feeds them money.

Money talks.

While I think Zamasu's arc was a complete and total mess of poor characterization, you can tell that there was at least a token attempt to explore darker themes with him and his god complex. So I can't really say that the target audience is much different. If anything, Super attempts to shoot higher...it just fails really badly at it.

Dragonball to me always has its lighthearted moments, and its darker moments throughout the series. I don't believe this is anything new at all. I am just now seeing Super and it seems like it can go into deeper themes at times.

And considering what Lazerbem said along with call backs to early Dragon Ball like the Mafuba, I'm almost certain that it's at least bay much considering long time fans as well.

Dragon Ball Super has a very... Let's call it varied target audience from what I can tell.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Pretty sure the target audience for Dragon Ball in general is kids. Or teens, to be more specific. So Super most likely follows the same blueprint, although I'm sure they keep in mind that they have a number of viewers who were originally in that target audience, but have grown up.

Seems like the same target audience as Dragon Ball Z, which is roughly around 12 imo.

I'm not sure who it's aimed for, but it's definetely not the same target audience as the original series. The OG series could show off a lot of violence and gore, DBS has ridiculous levels of censorship.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.
