My Dear Melancholy,

That’s now one step closer to reality, an international team of researchers led by the Salk Institute reports in the journal Cell. The team created what’s known scientifically as a chimera: an organism that contains cells from two different species. (Read more about the DNA revolution in National Geographic magazine.)

In the past, human-animal chimeras have been beyond reach. Such experiments are currently ineligible for public funding in the United States (so far, the Salk team has relied on private donors for the chimera project). Public opinion, too, has hampered the creation of organisms that are part human, part animal.

This is kinda cool and helpful as long as it doesn't get too out of control. Kinda glad my city (Baltimore) made it kinda neat.

...Of all animals, why a pig?

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Calling it a human-pig Chimera just makes it sound like we'll have half human half pig people running around attacking people

Interesting if they can get it to work.

But the body rejects organs that are from another animal so surely the closer they get the organs to being human, the less pigs bodies will accepting of them?

I'm guessing because pigs and human share a lot of DNA so there's a higher chance it'll work?

@OP I always thought this stuff was illegal. It's cool but it's kinda messed up isn't it? It's part human and it's going to grow up being half...pig?

To my knowledge they don't.

Even dolphins are genetically closer to us than pigs.

They actually do, you can replace a humans heart with a pigs and it'll work.

Not perfectly, the persons body will reject it so they'll need to be on supplements and whatnot for the rest of their lives but they'll live.

Dolphins would be much harder to care for to this end, pigs are easy and can eat practically anything.

I wonder though, do they pigs just have their human organs harvested and then killed or do they continue to live as a regular pig after?

Because if they were harvested for the meat industry afterwards...that'd be a pig containing human cells.
Walking close to the line of cannibalism there

I imagine the pig would just be killed, seems a bit of a waste. Hopefully they can basically just grow a lifeless mass of flesh that contains human organs.

Probably do a caesarean section to remove the new heart.

And so dawns the age of the super pigs with two hearts that destroy the human race...

Wonder if we'll ever apply this science to humans? Like if we could increase our survivability by having two hearts, Timelord style.

That'd be cool. I'd prefer extra organs to becoming a cyborg.
