If you've been following the Dakota Pipeline Coverage at all, you'll know that pipelines are currently a hot button issue for the U.S. Facts of the Dakota Pipeline aside, I want to ask (in general) what you think about pipelines. Are they currently the safest method we have for extracting oil? Are they necessary for the economy? This isn't just a Republican belief. Even Obama and Hillary seemed to think that they were necessary. It's hard to know the truth when it's clouded by Indian reservations and rights, which is why I'm separating this discussion from the Dakota pipeline. |

Honestly, I don't think so. It stems from the desire to use fossil fuels, so if the decision was made to invest in, say, renewable energy, pipelines wouldn't even be that beneficial. |

This is the issue. We're at peak fossil fuel usage now (on a global scale) we need to be weening ourselves off it. Investing in these pipelines is a mistake. Funding should be prioritising renewables right now in both implementation and especially research. |

This is somewhat off topic but I don't know if I should start a new thread or not? It does tie in to your question but just takes a little bit to get there. As a North Dakotan who has worked in the energy industry for the last 5 years and actually visited DAPL, I can tell you that there is some bad press surrounding the project. There is a belief that this pipeline will be the first one of its kind running under Lake Oahe, that is simply not true. There are actually 8 pipelines that flow under the lake. The protesters claim the project is being fast tracked by The Energy Transfer Partners (the company building the pipeline) to bypass their concerns, but September court documents show that ETP worked with Federal, State, and local officias and organizations for years to safely route the pipeline with the fewest disruptions. ETP participated in 559 meetings with community leaders and organizations, they asked for and received a tougher federal permitting process at sites along the Missouri River which included a mandated review of each water crossing's potential effect on historical artifacts and locations. Protesters claim the Army Corps of Engineers failed to consult tribal leaders as required by Federal law but the record shows that they held 389 meetings with 55 tribes. Court records also show the Army Corps alerted the tribe to the pipeline permit application and repeatedly requested meetings with tribal leaders but they were ignored over and over. The protesters say this did not happen. The pipeline route was actually adjusted based on concerns by local tribe leaders, among others, who met the the Army Corps of Engineer officials. Court documents also show that Standing Rock refused to meet with the corps until after the installation. There are some more contradictions that I won't get into but the reality is that the hatred people have toward ETP that say they blindsided Standing Rock is simply untrue, it is actually the reverse. The protest became hectic after Jesse Jackson made a public statement saying that it is racist for a pipeline to travel through Lake Oahe, which spurred on professional activists. They even hired tutors to teach their children in campers so they can remained camped out there at all times. So my belief is that pipelines are not as dangerous as many people think. I personally have never had to work on any, but according to the Fraser Institute Study in Canada, pipelines are 4.5 times safer than railcars. So if the question is strictly are pipelines necessary as a safe alternative? Than I would say yes, but if you are asking about the fundamental question regarding fossil fuels and carbon admissions, than the answer is a little more lengthy.. It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

We should be weening off of fossil fuels. Instead, we're finding new and not-so-exciting reasons to continue burgeoning a dying industry that's cannibalizing itself as the population exponentially increases as well as destroying land and reservations. To put it mildly, the North Dakota Access Pipeline has infuriated me and is quite frankly, in my opinion, a borderline human rights violation. We don't need to be causing more clean drinking water problems in the mainland United States. That just shouldn't be happening. Fracking water is disgusting and undrinkable. We don't need another Flint, Michigan. They still don't have clean drinking water. |

ETP is paying to move the water intake area 70 miles down stream from the contested area. So the water will be fine. |
