What's the closest you've been to losing your life? Did it change you at all?

ZERO HOOTS GANG

I almost fell off the bed of a moving truck going 60 mph. Considering I was 11 at the time I can't say it changed me all that much, but now looking back at felt like a scene out of a movie.

How: the back of the trucks latch just opened cuz my grandpa didn't close it right.

I almost drowned twice. One time when I was in middle school, my buddy and I went down to the river and we started walking out on a sandbar. I stepped into a drop off and the current took me down stream a bit, I tried to touch ground with my feet but ended up inhaling some water which made me panic. I swam as hard as I could (and I'm not a great swimmer, I'm not even a good swimmer) against the current to get back to the sandbar, when I made it back I collapsed on the shore my whole body just shut down.

The other time was in High School and was something similar, regarding a sandbar and against current. We had to swim back from one sandbar to another and there was a lot current against us. The 3 of us took turns swimming to the opposite sandbar. I was last and when I was paddling I heard them yelling something so I looked up cause I thought they said I made, but they didn't. I once again panicked and tried to touch ground which caused me to inhale water again. I missed the sandbar by about a foot so my buddy Tim grabbed my arm to pull me up but I ended up taking him with me. My other buddy Derek grabbed Tim and saved us both from drifting down the river.

It's quite likely I would have died if I didn't make it to the sandbar.. It didn't change me a lot lot, but it did make me more weary every other time I went swimming.

Flashy Thing!

I can list a few things, most occupational hazards but I'll just list one. I was driving south toward a 4-way intersection and had a blinking yellow light while the east and west directions had a blinking red. By the time I was almost directly in the middle of the intersection my boss who was riding with me said "watch out" and pointed to a vehicle coming straight at me. That vehicle wasn't moving the last time I saw it so I was surprised to see it coming at me all of a sudden. I hit the brakes and cut the wheel hard away from him hoping that this person would do the same; he didn't.

We collided in the middle of the 4-way intersection with his front passenger side hitting my driver side wheel. My car was nearly totaled. I can honestly say, I don't know what would have happened if the kid hit my door (me) instead of the wheel.

The driver of the other vehicle was a 17 year old brand new driver who states that he never saw me. From my knowledge of drivers, especially poor drivers, they tend to only look in the direction they are turning without regard to oncoming traffic.

I almost legit choked to death on a boiled sweet (like a solid piece of candy for americans) after accidentally swallowing it whole.

Didn't breath for some time and had to have the full on Heimlich maneuver and everything. I think I passed out at one point, but unless this is the afterlife, everything was fine afterwards.

Also had a similar thing where a heavyset of goal [soccer] posts fell over on top of me, and the cross bar landed on my neck (again when I was very young). Another pass out moment due to lack of oxygen, but somebody saved me.

Have I changed? Who knows I was like 6 at the time.

One time while snowboarding I wiped out and inhaled a bunch of snow, I was actually choking on the snow. I had to wait for it to melt in my throat before I could breathe again. Not really a near death experience because it seemed to happen fast, I was only choking for a few seconds.. but I wonder what would have happened if that snow didn't melt that fast? That would be a horrible way to die.. choking on something that will eventually melt as long as you stay alive long enough for it to melt
