Generals John Kelly and Mattis have now been confirmed for the Director of Homeland Security and Secretary of Defense, respectively. My thoughts on his other choices are scattered. Rex Tillerson - I like a lot, not a politician, businessman who will want to work with countries for overall good. Serene, intelligent, likeable. Betsy Devos - Horrible choice for Sec Ed. Should not be anywhere near a position of power, what the hell was Trump thinking? Steven Mnuchin - Although hesitant about him at first due to his past employment with Goldman Sachs, his actions and answers during his confirmation hearing have really reverse my opinion. I actually am starting to like him and I believe he will do a good job if confirmed. Rick Perry - Idiot. Mike Pompeo - I don't know much about him but I don't like how he wants Snowden on the chopping block. Despite what you think of Snowden, he did show the world how the US government was violating the constitution against its own citizens, and he showed how Jake Clapper lied to congress under oath, a crime he was never charged of. Jeff Sessions - I don't mind him, he's not a racist like they are trying to make him out as. They dislike him due to his tough stance on immigration. Which is nothing more than enforcing current law. I think he would follow the law accordingly. Tom Price - A good person if you are against Obamacare, which 48.3% of the people currently are Hopefully he doesn't repeal anything until a proper plan is in place. I think we should adopt Rand Paul's plan and let the free market work then end the Fed. Once the Fed's gone we can try again for Universal healthcare The rest of the cabinet I don't care about. Your thoughts? What do you think of them? Edited by Political Piper, Jan 21 2017, 12:53 AM.

I like Mattis for Sec of Defence, well respected in the military and seems to actually give a s***. Obviously qualified for the position. My only gripe is that Sec of Defence is a civilian position and I do think it's important for civilian oversight of the military, while Mattis is retired he still has that link. I actually think they had to waive a rule or create an exception for him to be appointed because his service ended so recently right? Honestly don't know enough about Kelly to comment. Tillerson is a bad choice for Sec of State. He has no diplomatic or political experience whatsoever and he's supposed to be the USA's top diplomat? Business experience is all well and good but it's a completely different ball game to being a diplomat. Add in to that concerns about his conflicts of interest with Exxon and you've got a potential disaster. I think Rubio really exposed him during his confirmation hearing. Even if you don't go with an experienced diplomat, go with an experienced politician at least who knows political discussion. I'm still mad he didn't pick Romney. My other problem with Tillerson is that he won't provide any pushback to Trump and will just roll over, which is not what a good Sec of State should be doing. DeVos is a disgraceful appointment, she has no idea what she's talking about. The fact that a nominee for Sec of Education had no idea what the growth v proficiency debate was is staggering. Even I knew what it was and I have no experience with education. Mnuchin is an a***** and his appointment makes a mockery of Trump's "drain the swamp" claims. After all the talk of Hilary being in Goldman Sach's pocket then look who he appoints as Secretary of Treasury. His lack of disclosure on his offshore accounts is also concerning and his attitude to foreclosure's is something I'd be pretty worried about. You've basically summed up Rick Perry well enough. Kind of depressing to see how high that moron has risen. Same concerns with Pompeo. I loathe Jeff Sessions for basically all his political views but at least he's competent. He's too good a lawyer to really get much of what he'll do based on his confirmation hearing so we'll have to see. Attorney-General is not a position that can effect legislative policy at least so I'm just happy he's kept away from that. Biggest concern with Price is, again, his conflicts of interest. I'm starting to get concerned with how blatant some of these are. For comparison, in Australia conflicts of a similar nature generally end up in a cabinet ministers resignation because it's just not accepted. These ethical rules exist for a reason and I feel like they're being pushed aside too often. Ben Carson is Rick Perry level terrible choice. Pruitt is a climate change denier and should be kept as far away from the EPA as humanly possible. Then again, so is Trump so I suppose from his point of view he's the perfect person to demolish it and hinder efforts to save the planet. |

I forgot about Ben Carson. I thought he did really well in his hearing. I know he doesn't have any practical experience but his life experience does coincide with his position, with respect to understand what' it's like growing up in hell. I'm not sure if you watched his hearing but he had some good answers. He didn't look like an idiot like Devos did. I hope she doesn't get confirmed. And yes, Mattis has been out for 4 years (I believe) and it has to be at least 7. But he's so well respected that nobody really fears Trump using him as a pawn to transfer the Republic into a totalitarian regime. Which is the fundamental reason why people want military officers to be a civilian for a set number of years. |

I can't help but wonder about his thought process behind choices like Woody Johnson for Ambassador for the UK. |
