Easiest Total War to get in to? (that's somewhat recent)

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

I've been wanting to get Total War: Warhammer for ages now but my PC set up is not the best and it's still somewhat expensive to buy without knowing if I'll be able to play it properly...

What would be a good one to start off with? Watching a playthrough of Rome: Total War and it's pretty cool but it's a bit dated looking. I realize the Warhammer one is very different but generally having a go of one would be a good warm up and most of them look cool anyway.

Also it would be nice if it was one that would work on Windows 10 properly, getting older games like Fallout 3 to work on Steam is damn annoying. Something I can buy and just play right away would be right up there in priority.
But mostly ones with variety and replayability, that's what I like best about the Warhammer game there's so many really different factions to it. Don't want to play through once and come away knowing how to win every time with every army.

Kinda sucks how even ones from 2010 are £15 on Steam, curse you poverty!

As much as I love Total War Attila so far, that's probably not a game you want to start with, for one it's not as well optimized, and for another it's much more complicated in terms of maintaining an empire, you have to manage public order, and squalor, and food, and religion. The fertility in the ground plays a major part, in certain nations you build you may have to choose between keeping your empire or outright beginning a migration (usually into Roman lands), becoming a horde to escape the Hunnic invasion, the ever growing cold, and/or other enemies. New nations are more likely to start up around you, and so on.

Warhammer by contrast, you only have to deal with two things, corruption, and public order, which iirc usually require the same building to combat, and aside from certain places being outright uninhabitable, the empire building is completely stripped down to the bare essentials, and as you've said, the armies are far more varied there with more unique units, less factions but every faction plays immensely differently, as well as various lores of magic to play with.

If all you're looking for is strategic battles and such, Warhammer is simultaneously the most varied and the least complicated (loose formations aren't even a thing in Warhammer compared to Attila or Shogun 2).

Also Warhammer runs better than Attila.

I'd say either Medieval 2 or Empire are probably the best places to start. The latter is completely broken mind. There are mods that help but the ai is freaking stupid in that one.

Medieval two is much better in that regard and I think it's a simple enough game to get the hang of.

Yeah ideally I want Warhammer but according to people on Reddit my i3 4360 wouldn't be very good with it so I think I'll need to wait until I upgrade to an i5 at least.

Which won't be happening for a while...

What's better between Atilla and Rome 2? They look decent.

There's a few demo's on Steam. Going to check out the Napoleon one first, I'm more interested in medieval sword and shield(and a little fantasy) sort of stuff but it's free so why not.

There's a demo of Shogun too, though I kinda dislike the look of it. Then again, I would assume there are ninja's...

I suppose Medieval might be fun if I can play as the Scots and pretend we'd ever be capable of conquering the world in that age...oh yes.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I've only really played Medieval 2, which is a really good game. I don't play the battles, but the non-battle gameplay is easy enough to get the hang of (and I've played a few battles which, despite being s*** at, are fairly easy to control). My only criticism of it is that I find it monotonous if I play it too much.

So they all have the auto-resolve thing I take it?

That's good, I want to play the battles but my mouse and keyboard kinda suck seems to be quite a bit of latency going on since I'm across the room and they're wireless.

Just hoping I can read the text in the game, most PC games aren't designed for big TV screens.

EDIT Mmmm, demo of Medieval 2 didn't go so well.

It seems to run perfectly at 60FPS but my mouse fails me I think, unless it's just buggy because it's a demo.
Apparently it should be that, cavalry apparently don't want to charge sometimes.

Not too big a fan of that one could barely see what was going on, all the greenery kinda got in the way. Guess a newer game might have a less buggy demo will check out Napoleon next.

EDIT 2 Napoleon is no good either, can see what's going on a lot clearer...but the text is way too tiny for my eyesight.
I do not get why games don't add the option to make the text larger I've never had an issue reading text in a console game it's always a good size for basically any screen.
Guess there might be mods for it, probably not for the demo's though.

Also apparently I was getting 1700FPS on Napoleon, damn my computer is a beast

You could just try playing it on a different resolution.

I tried most of them doesn't make much difference unless I go way far down but 600x400 on a 43 inch TV just looks daft.

I don't get why you can't just scale text directly in games, the UI would get bigger of course but not everyone minds. Kind of annoying since you can customize practically every other detail.

Napoleon was definitely better for me than Medieval 2 anyway aside from the text size, the camera seems a lot more manageable. Had no idea what I was doing in it of course so made ALL my units attack at once, it almost worked until some cavalry destroyed musketeers...

I might just try Total War: Rome, that's what I'm watching a playthrough of. Should be easy to follow along that way and I'm already familiar with the UI...hopefully the text isn't microscopic.
