Do you think Gohan turning SSJ2 over #16 was a bad catalyst?

I hear from some people claim that #16 'dying' being the thing to trigger Gohan going SSJ2 as forced and weak because prior to his death he was a robot designed to kill his father but I don't think that's fair. #16 put his robo life on the line to save Earth only to be blasted to pieces and reduced to nothing but a head, then in quite possibly the most pitiful moment of the entire series he pleads for Gohan to drop his restraints so he can protect the animals and nature that he, too, had loved as his 'dying' wish before Cell callously crushes his head mocking him further as a failed machine.

Also it's not like it was only #16's 'death' that pushed him to the edge. Cell spent pretty much the entire fight trying to provoke him despite warnings... just so he can have a challenge, even going as far as to having his children brutalize his friends to death least he rages.

What do y'all think?

A weak scene?? Wtf? That was one of the most awesome and memorable scenes in the series. 16 was just like gohan. He was powerful and he loved life and although he didn't like violence he understood that sometimes fighting for what you love is necessary and gohan needed to learn that lesson. It was interesting to hear it from a robot imo it was a good wake up call especially to hear it from someone who's just like gohan(peaceful)

Yeah, I hear that and I understand what they're saying. But the sudden shock of one moment having a conversation with 16 and then the next his head being smashed was a big enough shock to make him transform. I don't really have issues with the way they did it.

#16 was a peaceful artificial human, that cherished life and was willing protect it with violence if push came to shove. He's essentially just like Gohan in that department, he's a pacifist for a majority of the series. I think #16 being killed was the way to go.

I can see the similarities between 16 and Gohan, but the problem is they had zero interaction prior to that scene, they're strangers and only spoke for a few seconds before Cell killed him. Although I can see why it would hurt Gohan to see Cell crush 16's head right before his eyes.

When you really think about it, the fact that Cell was willing to kill a fellow creation might have made Gohan realize the desperation of the situation.

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

It also illustrated Cell's ruthlessness. If the Cell Jr's wouldn't finish Gohan's friends, he certainly would. It also perfectly captured the fighting spirit of the Z-Fighters, in that moment, what they believed in and what they fought for. Android 16 was an example of someone formed into a good being by Earth, despite just being an Android. It really put things into perspective for Gohan, and he went from feeling powerless to feeling enraged - enough was enough. It was a very powerful scene in Dragonball.

Gohan was emotionally crushed by Cells actions (making his friends/father suffer etc) and was close to the breaking point, Android 16's death right in front of his face and his incapability to help him while his head was crushed wa style final trigger for Gohan's despair which unlocked the power, not to mentions 16's speech right before he died.

It was meant to be an impactful scene because Gohan and 16 shared the same values. Throughout the series, we see Gohan connecting with nature in a way that other characters do not, specifically in his time spent training in the wild, befriending animals. He's a very meek, down-to-earth character who never enjoyed the thrill of fighting like Goku and Vegeta did. 16 is similar in both of those senses. They fight for the same reasons; they care about the same things. The two characters had limited interaction with one another, but I don't think that was the point of the scene. It wasn't a "Cell just killed my good friend" type of scene, it was a "Cell just killed my ideals and everything that I stand for and fight to protect." Toriyama meant for it to be symbolic. Of course, the Funi dub and Faulconer track deliberately take away from that message, which is one of the many reasons I prefer the Japanese version.
