Why do people get tattos and why are some "addicted" to getting tatooed?

The addicted part is easy to answer. http://www.attn.com/stories/4353/science-behind-tattoo-addiction

People get tattoos for many reasons. The most common is because they want to remind themselves of something permanently. Often ends up bad.

I might get a tattoo at some point, but for now I haven't. The pain of getting one scares me.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I don't really know anything about the history of tattoos, so I can't tell you why they exist, but there are many reasons people get tattoos in the modern day. Like Engineer said, one common reason is to memorialise something or someone, another to show your loyalty to something or someone, then there's just because they like the way it looks.

I don't have any, and don't plan to get any either. Not my sort of thing.

"Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is."

You are calm and reposed, let your beauty unfold

It might not even be something that particularly means a lot to you. I have one tattoo and it does mean quite a bit to me, but one of my flatmates has 19 (including 8 on one arm) and several are just cool designs she liked when she went into the parlour. I don't think there's even a handful of easy generalisations of why people get tattoos.

I'd be really interested to know the history of them now that I think about it. We see a lot of cultures where tattoos relate a tribal or family identity so that's maybe how it started across the world, to some degree or another.

There are two kinds of people who get tattoos: 1) people who want to remind themselves of a specific image or event or 2) people who are actually into the art of tattooing. Tattoos are an art form; therefore, people who are into said art form are going to show their support. It's the same with anything really.

There is also a third type as well: Those that want tatoo's so other people can see them, in a shallow-ish kind of way.

In relation the history of tattoos, I would suggest reading this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_tattooing

which shows various reasons such as religious/status in a culture or tribe and many other things. That understandable evolved to the point its at now, with people just out right paying for tattoos as/when they want them.

I personally have a tattoo, which is on my left calf and its the exact same one my dad has, in the same place. He had it for many years as a random piece of artwork (its a custom designed Sun with an angry face on it), so I suggested getting the same one...so it means something to both of us.

I would like more, but to be honest I can't think of anything that means as much to me as this one currently does.

Why do people get tattos
Because they want to. Why not?
