In this day and age, people catfish more than they have ever before thanks to the help of the internet. Why do people do this?

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

Early in the year I catfish on my lake because they taste better when they haven't been sitting at the bottom of the lake all spring/summer :p

But I don't know a lot of people that will eat it regardless. It's certainly an awkward fish, being a bottom feeder and all.

Is catfish euphemism for something, or do you mean ACTUAL catfish as in the fish?

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Catfishing is when you pretend to be somebody you aren't online and trick people into relationships.

"Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is."

I see.

I don't see people doing that other than in advertisements on Backpage or whatever.

My ex pretended to be me on a couple of occasions while we were dating. She would go behind my back and text other girls pretending to be me. Word is she sent nude pictures of me to other women, too. She had told me when we were dating that she had catfished in the past, but I figured she was over that. I didn't find out about all of this until after we had broken up.

Why did she do it? Insecurity. She was a very insecure person who hated the way she looked, and because she was so weak, she allowed those thoughts to overcome her. She's also a terrible person, so there's that too.

According to those who have either come out as Catfish, or been outed on the MTV show "Catfish", its because they are either:

A) straight up bad people, who are doing it for laughs
B) started doing it as a joke, then it spirals out of control because they genuinely care about somebody
C) They don't like their physical appearance and catfish as somebody "better" looking.

Waste of time if you ask me, but some people have issues.
