Your looks determine how people approach you, what they think of you, and how they treat you to some degree. I think based on that those that do care a lot about their appearance have good reason to care about it. |

If we were talking on a more sociological/anthropological reasons, taking interest in your physical appearance aided in one's ability to pass on your genes. If you were appealing to the opposite sex, chances are you were gonna end up making babies. |

As mentioned, its for the benefit of other people. Whether that's to improve their perception of you professionally or sexually. For me I find, as you get older, that sort of thing slowly goes out the window. You realise that, for example, having tattoo/looking/dressing a certain way doesn't mean you're less interesting or not as smart as other people, you just do what you want to do. A good example is: Casually, I still dress is "skater" clothes, as that's what I grew up in, and feel most comfortable in. I have a beard currently, and despite loving heavy metal music, I don't have the stereotypical piercings/tattoos as its just not for me. TL:DR = Basically, who cares. Do what you like, just don't be an idiot. |

Pretty much this. I've noticed people treat me differently based on if I'm wearing my glasses or not, among strangers that is. |

Were human and humans make conscious and unconscious opinions regarding people and things they see. We're also very social and attractive people (not overly attractive) are often perceived as easier to approach. |

You don't have to charm your way in with wit if you can do it with a suave appearance. People will automatically want to listen to you.

Humans are overly visual creatures and make subconscious judgments of an individual based on their appearance. More attractive people are generally perceived as more successful in life, friendlier & trustworthy than someone whom would generally be considered ugly. That's the Halo effect. There's truth to the more attractive=more successful in real life view. If 2 people are equally qualified for a job, the more attractive individual is more likely to get the position. Even if the more attractive person is less qualified to some degree, they would be a better face for the business, so subconsciously the more attractive person can end up looking more qualified due to inherent bias. Hence being more attractive allows you achieve similar results to someone less attractive while only putting in half as much work. Socially, it's obvious that more attractive people do better than ugly people due to the Halo effect described earlier which makes people gravitate to them, so they end up having a much bigger support network, hence more opportunities in life. People also generally want to get married sometime into the future and being ugly obviously doesn't help. You need to pass the other person's attraction threshold to even get into the door before other aspects of you like your personality, interests, etc begin to matter.
