Yamcha's Character Change

Is it just me or did Yamcha's character seem to change completely from Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Z. In Dragon Ball Yamcha was fairly confident in his battles and they carried that over nicely into Dragon Ball Z and they kept his qualities of his passion for fighting and that he wasn't afraid of dying. But it seemed that once we got to the Trunks Saga he started to become a bit of a coward and ever since then he was afraid of every opponent. From the beginning of Dragon Ball to the Saiyan Arc he has been a consistent character, but afterwards his character was changed quite a bit. Yamcha from Dragon Ball wasn't afraid of opponents who he knew he was completely outclassed from yet in Dragon Ball Z he's afraid of every opponent. It's not consistent and it really bothers me. They do consistently keep him as a coward though even into Dragon Ball Super by having him not fight against Beerus or Frieza's Army. But they didn't end what they started with. Idk this just really bothers me.

I guess it might be due to his experience of dying at the hands of the saibamen. And partly because he became a bit more mature as the series went on. I think he just realized that they were many dangerous opponents outside of earth(i.e Saiyans, Freiza etc) and within the Earth also(i.e Androids, Cell) and as a mere human he just couldn't just match up with them and was just completely outclassed by them. I think he just didn't want to risk his life again especially against opponents who were not earthlings. It's pretty understandable as to why he ended up like that if we look at it from his point of view and consider his experience of encountering opponents who weren't normal/Humans.

I think he realized that his opponents were becoming way too powerful and no longer from the planet. There was no way he would be able to stand up to them so it might've crushed his confidence.

Well, Yamcha doesn't have a really good rep in battles, not only does he lose most of the battles he participates in, but he usually puts up a poor performance. Roshi beat him in the 21st tournament, easily. Tien toyed with him, and then beat him in the 22nd tournament. Then you have Kami, who beat him in the 23rd tournament, though to be fair he actually hit Kami with the spirit ball, and Kami was on a different level entirely. Then comes dbz, Yamcha shows up and puts up a good performance against the saibamen, but then he gets caught off guard and dies.

I would guess that Toriyama took a look at the way Yamcha was developing and decided to place him as more of a background character. By the Trunks saga and beyond he became useless, he became the most irrelevant human character, well, besides Chiaotzu.

He died and he had a good sized hole punched in him while not being able to ask for help as his energy was drained. He doesn't get sucked in to the battles anymore because he isn't stupid, doesn't want to die, and his loyalties to the saiyans weren't at piccolo and krillin levels
