I'm sad that FutureProtagonist isn't active anymore! ![]() I need some help with buying a laptop this week since there are numerous good deals out there. I need a laptop that has a fast CPU. This laptop will have solely one use: for logging and tuning my car. I need a laptop with a fast and strong CPU. Since they differ from desktop parts, I don't really know what's good. I'm seeing i3, i5, and i7 CPU's, but they have a low GHZ processor. RAM isn't as important, but the minimum must be 4GB. SSD and HHD don't matter either, however an SSD in this day of age would be the optimal choice. I also don't need a lot of storage. Even 60GB is enough. I'd like to be in within the $300 price range. So, please tell me what I need to know about the CPU specs. The current one that I have is an Intel Atom 1.6GHZ and it barely works. It struggles just with logging data, however, I've had it for 3 years now. To conclude, I'd need at least the following: CPU: whatever is fast GPU: doesn't matter RAM: minimum 4GB HDD/SSD: at least 60GB Size: 11-14" screen (prefer smaller) I found these two so far, but I don't know how good or how fast those CPU's are. http://www.ebay.com/itm/291847485487?rmvSB=true (Note: touchscreen doesn't matter and I prefer not to have the feature.) Intel Core i5-6200U 2.3 GHz http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-laptop---15z-z9r46av-1?jumpid=prebfs112016_laptops_17_Z9R46AV AMD Quad-Core A6-7310 APU (2 GHz, up to 2.4 GHz, 2 MB cache) + AMD Radeon™ R4 Graphics The CPU GHZ seem low and I don't know if they'd be able to process what I need done. 2.5-3.0GHZ would be ideal. Actually, the Acer one is more than I'd be willing to dish out. I don't need touchscreen. Someone, please help me out here!

Well, for starters, the Atom is terrible on the laptop platform. I've never had a good experience with an Atom processed laptop. They just weren't built for something that size, more for phones and tablets. i7 would always be your best bet. Though and i5 would greatly reduce your price. |

So, the first laptop: -Intel Quad Core N3700 1.6 GHz, Turbo to 2.4 GHz -128GB eMMC Flash and 4GB RAM for Fast Boot time and application performance I'm assuming the hard drive is like an SSD? Tell me about this damn CPU. My current one is a 1.6 GHZ and it's slow as hell! How does that turbo 2.4 GHZ work exactly? The second laptop: -7th Generation Intel Core i3-7100U Processor (2.4GHz, 3MB L3 cache) Hmmm, i3? Is this one just a base 2.4 GHZ? I just need it work right. My current one lags hardcore when I open up Chrome after a boot up. I was looking at i7 laptops earlier today and it seems that I won't find a good one for under $500. This option might be out the window at the moment. I'm still looking for new deals to come up. |

It's a memory card that's soldered into the motherboard. It's decent. A bit faster than a regular hard drive, but that's pretty much it. That CPU is a quad core, so it has four physical cores, but there's a problem considering that it doesn't have L3 cache, so the four cores won't be much better than the i3 in multi-core works, if at all. The stock clock is slow, but the turbo boost makes it decent. The only real advantage this processor has over the i3 is the lower power consumption. Turbo boost works when the processor needs more processing power. That's pretty much it. The other laptop is pretty good. It has superior integrated graphics, and basically performs better. This would basically come down to which one looks better and has the features you want. You should look at which i7 version it is too. Most notebooks have the U version of the CPU, which is ultra-low power. Most, if not all of them, are dual core processors with hyper-threading. They difference between the i7s, i5s, and i3s are the clocks and amount of cache. Also, only the i7s and i5s have turbo boost. https://www.amazon.com/F555LA-US71-15-6-inch-Laptop-i7-5500U-Windows/dp/B01C4HCBNA/ref=sr_1_9?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1479920595&sr=8-9&keywords=i7-5500u+laptop&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011 This is the lowest I'd go for an i7 without compromising a lot of features. Anyway, if you could hold on your laptop for a year, that would be great. Cannonlake will be released next year, and it will bring a ton of features on the mobile side of processors. Actually, it will only be released for low-power laptops. If you really needed a laptop, go with the laptops I listed for you earlier. If you needed more processing power, then go with the 5th generation i7 laptop. |

I could care less about the 2 in 1 and touchscreen, but if it's available, why not use it? i7 2.5GHZ with 3.1GHZ turbo boost. Will this one perform to the point that I need it to? |

Close up shop because we have a winner! ![]() Well, one of two options have risen up in my research. Allow me to start by stating that I will NOT be buying either of these two laptops new. I will have to wait at least 6-12 months in order to find some good deals. However, both seem to be terrific candidates for my needs. Contender 1: ![]() HP Spectre 13-v151nr http://store.hp.com/us/en/ContentView?storeId=10151&eSpotName=hpspectre -Windows 10 Home 64 -7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7500U (2.7 GHz, up to 3.5 GHz, 4 MB cache, 2 cores) -8 GB memory; 256 GB SSD -Intel® HD Graphics 620 -1 headphone/microphone combo; 1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-C™, HP USB Boost); 2 USB 3.1 Gen 2 (Type-C™, HP USB Boost, Thunderbolt) -4-cell, 38 Wh Li-ion -12.8 x 9.03 x 0.41 in -2.45 lb Currently, the world's thinnest laptop! I had two Macbook Air's in the past and loved how small and sleek they were! They were 0.69 inches thin and this new HP Spectre is 0.41 inches! I've seen a plethora of videos on this laptop alongside comparisons. The USB Type-C ports don't bother me at all since I can just get another adapter to USB 3.0 to match the one that already comes with the laptop. The only issue that I see with this laptop is the battery life. Most reviewers only managed to get 5-6 hours of real world usage. Other than the price point, it definitely seems to suit my needs really well! Hopefully, I'll be able to find a really good deal on a used or refurbished one within a year! Reviewers also said that this laptop is locked with Windows 10 and cannot be reverted back to Windows 7. I prefer Windows 7 just because I'm so used to it, however, I can still run all of my programs on Windows 10. Contender 2: ![]() New Dell XPS 13 http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/xps-13-9360-laptop?~ck=mn -Windows 10 Home 64 -7th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-7200U (3MB Cache, up to 3.1 GHz) -OR- 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7500U (4MB Cache, up to 3.5 GHz) -8 GB memory; 128 GB SSD -Intel HD Graphics -USB 3.0 with PowerShare, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps), Thunderbolt™ 3 Type C supporting: Power in/charging, PowerShare, Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps bi-directional) -60WHr Integrated Battery - 11.98 x 7.88 x 0.60 in -2.7 lb This one seems to have a superb battery life! Reviewers were getting between 11-12 hours of real world usage! The added bonus that I feel indifferent about this laptop is that it has two USB 3.0 ports readily available. This one seems to be the better candidate. Like the Spectre, aside from the price point, it definitely seems to suit my needs really well! Hopefully, I'll be able to find a really good deal on a used or refurbished one within a year! I will not be playing any games on these, so the GPU doesn't affect me whatsoever. One of these two options will replace my Chromebook, tuning laptop, and desktop. I'll only use the desktop for gaming when the time comes and I've gotten on of these two contenders. All in all, these look promising. Hopefully I'll be able to find one of them in the $500 range within a year!
