So I was just thinking about how ridiculous the powers were in the Saiyan Arc. By that I mean that the earthlings should not have gotten as strong as they did in the amount of time given. Goku, a saiyan, had trained relentlessly for three years by Kami/Mr. Popo to fight Piccolo. His power increase was nothing compared to the gains that Yamcha, Tien, Krillin, and even Yajirobe and Chiaotzu received. It's probable that their training was mostly the same as Goku's, but they only had training for one year instead of three and are earthlings. Even if they had progressed further than Goku and completed the training faster they still shouldn't have gotten as strong as they did. Piccolo's power is also ridiculous, if he could have gotten that strong from training in one year then he would have done so in the three years preparation for his fight against Goku or even the five years after the 23rd Tournament. The only person who's increase in power that doesn't both me is Goku's. King Kai said that training Goku in the allotted time was like training for a few thousand years on Earth. But otherwise all the other fighters should not have gotten as strong as they did in such a short amount of time with the training they performed. Piccolo being a namekian may be an exception, but if he could have done it before then he should have. |

Other than the obvious plot answer, I attribute the Earthlings' gains to having each other rather than being alone. Training with a bunch of peers is better than training alone, normally. Piccolo's gains between DB and Z have always been softened in my mind by him focusing most of his time on the Makankosappo, rather than his sheer power increasing. |

Pyrus pretty much summed it up. This is also the reason I attribute to Krillin retaining his "strongest human on Earth" claim, and not Tenshinhan. He not only had Roshi to help him, but 18 was capable of stomping Super Saiyans at one point. Tenshinhan had Chiaotzu... So, yea. |

I think the Freeza saga probably has the most ridiculous power gains in the entire series. When it starts off Gohan and Krillin's powers in the 1,000-2,000 range are considered pretty large. Large enough to get the notice of Freeza himself. By the end of the arc we're into the hundreds of millions. |

Yeah it definetly gets ridiculous after a while. I'm glad they scraped the idea of reading power levels after the Frieza saga. |

I don't think its that big a deal, they got training from God, literally. And were already a lot better disciplined. Getting 6 to 9 times stronger makes sense there. |

The power scaling in this series in general is pretty ridiculous, but yeah, the Saiyan arc was the beginning of noticeably large increases. |

You also have to note that the characters also made those gains in less than a year. |
