When I see bad, I don't think simple. I think broken. Simple is not bad. But I dig Tinny's post. And I understand where Buubs is coming from. It's all opinion at a certain point. |

There's very few mainstream games nowadays that have broken gameplay. In fact, there's very few games in general that are released with glitches that break the gameplay. If the gameplay is boring I think the story will suffer. Some people think simple is boring, ie Telltale Games or point and click LucasArts games. |

I mean simple isn't necessarily bad. Mario is as bare bones as you can get in terms of plot but it's still growing strong today. |

Well, Mario has gotten more and more complex as time has progressed, though we've had a lack of development since Galaxy 1. I think Nintendo's innovation has shown that gameplay can change even though it's mostly the same setup. 3D was a huge step for Nintendo. |

Yeah boring is worse I'd say unless we're talking so broken that it crashes every five minutes or your save files get wiped suddenly. Bethesda games for me are probably the best example of how broken a game can be while retaining fun and story. Doesn't matter to me that sometimes objects within the game will haunt me through multiple load zones and fly around the place in Fallout 3 or New Vegas 'cause the games are fun enough for that to not matter. But then something like Assassins Creed these days I find so bitterly dull that it doesn't matter what the story is like. |

When I say broken I'm talking like controls for example glitches can make a more enjoyable experience but it depends. |

Like many have said, genre plays a role. Overall, I think story can really enhance a game, but it's not completely necessary to make a good game. If the gameplay is top notch, sometimes that's enough to make me like a game. Metal Gear Solid V is an example I can think of, most fans loved the gameplay but hated the almost non existent story. Story was never as important back in the day when games were simpler, but we still had fun with them (such as Super Mario 64). Story has become more important nowadays though, but some games can still manage sometimes. |

Warframe is probably the best example of what games are capable of nowadays, originally people only really played it for the gameplay, probably some of the best gunplay not only for a free to play game, but for just games with guns in general. Then you add the parkour kind of elements space ninjas have, the melee weaponry, plus the myriad ways you can modify your weapon with mod cards you pick up in-game that have actual effects on how your enemies get hurt. The story however was never really strong whatsoever, pretty broad, pretty eh. But recently they've made strides in improving their quality dramatically. It's a good example for a thread like this, because it proves that you don't need good story if you have good gameplay. But it also proves that a good story can keep people coming back for more. Adding a lot of replay value. |

If story is a factor in said game, then it is extremely important to me. Strategy games don't require much of a story, so that's really the only exception I can think of off the top of my head. With anything else, it needs to have a good story or I'm not interested. |

The way I see it, there's kind of an opposite proportion between game play and story. This being, the more game play you have, the less story you could have and still have what could be considered a fun game. I think adding story in is good anyways but if you don't want it, you need to make it up with good game play. Something like the first Super Mario Bros. is not meant to be more enjoyed in terms of game play and thus gives you options to play. Imagine if you were limited in what you could do in that game, whether directly or indirectly and it had no story. It would kind of suck. If you don't have one thing, you have to make it up with another. Let's loo at it the opposite way. A Visual Novel takes far more inspiration from the story telling aspect than it does the game play aspect. Therefore a VN has to captivate its audience through its story because its actual game play is limited |
