As the main character of Dragon Ball and the ace he's gonna be gotta be good in the fighting games. In Budokai he was top-tier alongside Vegeta and Cell... he was very well-rounded. In Budokai 2 he was the same as there were no drastic changes from the first Budokai comparably... it mostly just refined and balanced things but in Budokai 3, the combat system got a massive overhaul and most of the characters had different (more diverse) movesets to accommodate the new changes. However, Goku was left relatively the same and he was pushed from top-tier to middle tier. His best combos required a lot of practice and he didn't particularly excel in any area. He also needed breakthrough to be truly useful. In Shin Budokai, the combat system went through even more drastic changes and everyone's movesets were totally different as well... but Goku changed for the worse. He was at the bottom of the tier list with bad virtually everything. It wasn't till by Infinite World where he returned back to his top-tier glory from the first two Budokai games though he was more of a rushdown character. He was also good in the Tenkaichi games but I don't remember too many of the specifics. How was he in the first Xenoverse game? |

(Note, this all just through my experience of using Goku.) I thought Goku in Xenoverse was good. The problem is, I think, everyone at the start don't really know or try to fully learn on how to utilize/play Goku. This kinda makes him look like he is at the bottom tier list. But, it's more like this, Goku can actually be very good but only if you learn to use him the way he is supposed to be used. If I rate him on a scale of 10, it's like this, Attack : 5 Ki : 6 Health : 6 Stamina : 10 As, you can see above from his generic stats, he is leaned more towards a strategic based melee combat style and his skills are meant to be follow up attacks as opposed to being used whenever you want. That is, you need to use him more like a counter-attack based style character. You need to know how to redirect you opponents attacks. It might also seem weird that he is grouped under a melee type character considering how weak/average his attack stats is. But, that's the thing, you have to use his melee style in a more strategic and combo based style. Goku's only big advantage is his incredible stamina stat. This gives him more Escapes,Blocking, teleportation etc. Which is very ideal for his counter based melee combo fighting style. And him having a slightly better Ki stat (than his attack stat) attribute enables him to perform some decent long range attacks also. Goku, also has some decent Health which provides some defense for him. Overall, he is an average character but if you use him correctly he can perform really well. And, I think the most hard part about playing Goku is mastering on how to use him effectively. |

He's good and skilled as an opponent, but when he becomes your ally, he sucks dick just like all other characters. |
