I'd say depression and other mood disorders is a pretty severe side-effect.
Lol, you do realize that women suffer those same side-effects from birth control pills, right?

Yes, I do. I never said anything about my view on female birth control though.

I think that if men are whining about the side effects, maybe they should consider the fact that women have been suffering through those side effects (and much, much worse) since birth control was invented. There's no such thing as full-proof birth control. At least not yet.

Maybe women should have whined about the side effects too?

They did. That's why we have such mild side effects now. Women used to die from taking birth control. If men can't handle these mild side effects, they can use a condom.

Why not a diaphragm?

Why not a diaphragm?
It isn't very effective.

Quote:

"If women always use the diaphragm as directed, 6 out of 100 will become pregnant each year.
If women don't always use the diaphragm as directed, 12 out of 100 will become pregnant each year."

Diaphragms do not protect you from sexually transmitted infections."

"The diaphragm

- may be difficult for some women to insert
- may be pushed out of place by some penis sizes, heavy thrusting, and certain sexual positions
- must be in place every time a woman has vaginal intercourse
- may need to be refitted"

"Some women who use diaphragms may develop frequent urinary tract infections. To avoid infection, you can urinate before inserting the diaphragm and after intercourse. If you get frequent bladder infections, ask your health care provider to check to see if your diaphragm fits correctly.

Some women who use diaphragms may develop vaginal irritation. This can be a sign of a sensitivity to silicone or to spermicide. If you have a mild reaction, try switching brands of spermicide to clear up the problem. If that doesn't work, stop using the diaphragm until you speak with your health care provider.

Check with your health care provider if you

- feel a burning sensation while urinating
- are uncomfortable when the diaphragm is in place
- have irregular spotting and bleeding
- feel irritation or itching in the genital area
- have redness or swelling of the vulva or vagina
- have unusual discharge from the vagina"

96% is only 2% less effective than male condoms. There are also female condoms too.

But why are we insistent on placing the sole burden and responsibility on women? I'm not even arguing this for the sake of women. So many men are screwed over and end up with a pregnant girlfriend because their girlfriend was the sole person responsible for preventing pregnancy. It's a screwed up system.

I got the impression from your post that you were placing the entire burden on men, so was just arguing that there are other options than male birth control pills and male condoms.

Obviously no one gender should be in sole charge of birth control. Find whatever routine suits the relationship of the parties involved. Just take turns if it's that much of an issue.

That's been my argument since the beginning. Trying out new methods of birth control for men is a good thing because it benefits both genders. What makes me upset is learning that they're now shelving the idea because men were complaining about the side effects, which is exactly what women go through. Women take birth control to prevent both parties from becoming parents, and because most men don't like condoms, all of that responsibility falls solely on the woman's shoulders.

But just because women had to put up with them doesn't make it a good idea. People shouldn't be taking something if they don't want to endure the side effects, there are other options out there.

I honestly wasn't even aware that the responsibility fell more on women than men. I was brought up with the idea of 'use a condom when having sex if you don't want kids or STDs' drilled into my head by parents and teachers. I was obviously aware that both parties had methods of birth control, but like I said, I grew up with the idea that if I met someone and wanted to have sex with them, I had to have a condom. Maybe I had a different upbringing than everyone else though.

Considering that most of the members in this thread so far have commented extensively on their distaste for condoms, along with my own personal experiences in which men have never wanted to use condoms, I do see it as a problem. But I'll obviously continue taking my pills that kill my sex drive for the sake of preventing an unwanted pregnancy, since that's my only other option and I'm pretty much fine with it.

I'm not blaming men at all. I'm blaming research. We should have been looking into this well before now.

It's not your only other option though. Diaphragms and female condoms exist. Also, if the guy doesn't want to use a condom and you don't wanna use birth control or any other method, tell him that if he wants to have sex then he has to use a condom. If he doesn't agree, then don't have sex with him.

Of course. I just think that men should be given more than one option.
