What i'm about to demonstrate is how nothing you do anymore is private. Privacy is false and the only thing still private in this world is your thoughts. We're close to getting that too by the way. I'm not responsible for anything that anyone does with this information. Social networks has opened the door for everyone to be connected in a circular fashion. Jimmy knows John, who knows Kendra because Kendra is friends with Barbara who is also friends with John. For instance: ![]() When I googled my name, this came up. It's something I posted on a Facebook group i'm a part of. Now, the thing is, i've got my facebook set up as non-indexed. Meaning Google can't find my page. That's great, but if I post in groups, it indexes that. Thus a small bit of privacy is lost. When you click on that link, it sends you to the group on facebook and directly to that page I posted on. Not only does it give you my profile picture, (you've just figured out i'm standing next to a woman who might be in a relationship with me), but you've also found a link to my youtube page. The youtube page gives you my screen name, and from there, you can google an entirely new set of information about me. It's scary isn't it? Well there's something else. You see the black square on the page? The information of text given there when typed into google with "" gives me the same result on line 3 as it did by googling my name. So if I googled that black square like, "Black Square" + Youtube, it would come up exactly matching the link above. So the thing is, you don't even need a person's name to find them. Everything that is entered on the internet is subject to index in some way. Don't know who just called you but you're sure it's a person? Type their phone number into Facebook. They might come up. Most people have their number indexed on Facebook. Try it out. If you pay for a domain name, unless you pay otherwise, you are subject to WHOIS data. WHOIS data is very very privacy breaching. It will give you the address, email account, and phone number of the person who registered for that site. For instance, my domain name is up for sale. http://whois.domaintools.com/iaepcrepair.com Searching my name gave this information and the most recent address, phone number, and email address that I used to buy it. I still get calls asking if I want to pay a hefty sum to have some company bump me to the top of google in views. I politely tell them to f*** off. Instagram is really bad. I don't even need an account to find you on instagram. There are third-party sites that mirror everything Instagram has, and even makes searching available. http://www.lakako.com/user Let's say you're interested in revenge. You enter that person's name into Instagram and wow look, he has over 200 pictures available for review. So you review them and you find that he posted a picture of his car. Not just a picture of his car, but a portion of his license plate and the model decal on the back, because he decided to take a picture of the strange whatever that was either on or near his car. That made a good photo-op right? You now have the ability to pick his car out of a massive lot just by matching up those letters, numbers, and colors. He gave up his privacy the moment he didn't think through his post on a public site. What's worse is, you think that there is not at least 1 person in the world who would go to the length above I just described to find you. I have news for you. The above is a true story. Twitter is equally as incriminating as the above, especially if you post pictures to it. It allows the viewer to know where you were last, and most of all, what you were thinking about. You know that thing that is still private? Your thoughts? Well you're regurgitating them in 120 characters or less. Doesn't leave much to the imagination. Third-party data mining services. http://www.whitepages.com/ https://www.mylife.com/ and etc. These sites blast through the internet putting pieces of a puzzle together to find anything related to a string of a name. Your name will probably show up on one of those sites. Try it out. The thing about them though is, they search through public data just like your stalker is able to do. Except they also have access to voters registration records, and anything else online tying you to a place of residence for more than 6 months. Usually can be found in state public records because you pay taxes, vote, car registration, etc... They aren't as information blasting as social media sites because a person has to pay for access to the good stuff. Most people will not pay to stalk, and if they do, it's a serious issue and you're probably pretty close to being dead at that point. User names. This is the worst. If the person you're looking for has a username that is unique, like most are, it can be tied back to any accounts on any sites that you might have. You don't really need an example, but i'm going to give you one anyway. Spoiler: click to toggle But better yet, who doesn't like both of those things? I know I do. This is the worst because the internet is built around quick usernames and everything from email addresses to site handles use them. They are indexed, and you are easily found. I can look back at history of stuff I've done since the first time I connected to the internet just by remembering my first username. Now you know why I always use Usernames on here that are completely common. Engineer, Rockman. You didn't really think I didn't plan any of this did you? ================================================================================================= What you can do about it: There's not much. You can't erase all username data off of search sites, but you can make your name look semi-professional to potential employers. Here's a start: http://lifehacker.com/5958801/how-to-commit-internet-suicide-and-disappear-from-the-web-forever The thing is, I want employers to google my name to make sure i'm not a lunatic. That's why I have my linkedin indexed at the very top. It's completely about me and my skills and nothing else. I can control what's there. Turn on Facebook privacy to maximum. Only allow friends of friends to see your profile, and turn off search engine indexing. Stop using instagram, twitter, or anything else that gives away location and habits. ======================================================================================= If you don't care: You should. One of these days that s*** you posted is going to catch up with you in some ugly way. Whether it's your ex stalking you or that old friend you didn't like trying to contact you. But let's say you owe people money, or you did something to them bad, or otherwise. You're a target to them and you might as well open the door for them when they arrive at your house based on all of the s*** you're posting on the internet. |

But I don't. I remember that one time I had junior admin rank on one of semi-big (around 70 players in prime) SA-MP (it's San Andreas Multiplayer mod, for those who may not know) Polish servers, climbed to that after about 6 months of playing or so (server was pretty small back then, so it wasn't that hard - considering most of the players hadn't what it takes and head admins were running short of staff). Then I heard some jealous players started talkin' s*** about me. One banned player even found my FB profile and started altering my photos and what not, just because I stupidly trusted one of them and he "miraculously" got the info (yeah, whatever). Don't remember if I showed myself to someone, showed FB or anything... Ah, yes, now I remember. He didn't actually found me, I just posted one of my photos on forum game "Show your face", that was the topic name, I believe. It started that way. Several years later I made another mistake to trust someone and made friends with him on FB. Then whole server full of haters started pocking fun at me and what not. And you know what? Nowadays, I couldn't care less about such things. People always talked s***, they do now, and they will always do. I used to get mad and get in arguments with trolls, but that's exactly what they want. My example is somewhat trivial, but you get the point. I also have like ex-girlfriend, who's in debt of about 100 bucks (she owe me 500 in our country currency, to be more specific) with me. She still didn't pay (more than one year has passed when I'm writting this). Doubt she'll ever do. And I'm through wasting my time on that. Could easily get revenge, but what gives? Just about nothing than a temporary satisfaction. Duh'. Just deal with it. In our f***ed up world you must learn to do, or shall I say, NOT to do just two things - not to care, not to trust. Accept these and you'll probably be fine. Also, expect anything from anyone. Closest friend or even loved one could backstab you at any time, you'll ask "Why?", but the real question is "Why not?". Human nature, I suppose. World would be too damn perfect if everyone would be honest with each other etc. Guess I'm putting too much thought into it... Anyway, that's how I view things. Not that it's a good approach, as "I don't care anymore" stance can easily hurt good persons, too, that's why it's essential to be good at pretending. After a long time, who knows - maybe things go in the right direction and I'll find some of my caring self I was just several years back. Maybe I'll believe that someone wouldn't use information (or just about anything) I gave them against me in near future. Not that I'd care if they do, it just proves my point not to trust and not to care at all. |

Look your reputation is one thing. I can understand if you do not really care about that. One thing you should care about is your safety. I have heard of stories, mostly of revenge or people that are simply ill in their heads, that of which people have done harm to others. People can easily do harm if you share everything about yourself. If you only share a little about yourself on sites and you don't go crazy with it then you are safe. If you end up sharing every single detail about your life, family, and friends then you are at risk. So that is just my two cents. |

I guess it is your right to not care about privacy. But think of all the grief you could have avoided by keeping such things private. |
