![]() "For the first time in years...I'm making the right choice" Marik Ishtar was born in unfortunate circumstances as a Tomb Keeper, a secretive family that swore to keep the Nameless Pharaoh’s tomb and secrets safe until his return. Marik found this life stifling and torturous, especially due to his cruel and abusive father. One day, Marik was given his initiation as a Tomb Keeper, a ritual which involved having secret markings carved onto his back with a knife. It was this agonizing experience which created the split personality, Yami Marik. However, through the actions of his adopted brother, Odion, Marik was able to keep the dark personality suppressed. One day, Marik rebelled and went into the outside world with his sister, Ishizu. Unfortunately for Marik, their little outing had been discovered by their father. Their father began to brutally punish Odion for letting Marik go, preparing to kill him. This brutality brought out Marik’s darker half, and Yami Marik slaughtered his father before he could be buried once more by Odion. Odion lied to his brother, telling him that the Nameless Pharaoh had ordered an ancient spirit called Shadi to murder their father. This inspired in Marik a deep hatred for the Pharaoh, leading him to form an organization known as the Rare Hunters which intended to take the Egyptian God cards in order to unlock their powers and set him free of his heritage and duty to the Pharaoh. Marik took the Winged Dragon of Ra for himself, but lost Obelisk to his sister and considered Slifer less important in his plans so gave him to a lesser minion. Marik would enter the Battle City tournament with the intent of defeating the Pharaoh, regaining the Egyptian God cards, obtaining more Millennium Items, and getting revenge. This set off a chain of events in which he allied with Yami Bakura and ended up in the quarter-finals with Odion impersonating him to keep his identity a secret. When Odion was knocked unconscious in a duel, Marik became unstable, and Yami Marik returned to the fore of his personality as he tossed Marik’s personality away. Yami Marik dueled brutally, crushing Mai Valentine with the powers of the Winged Dragon of Ra. Marik, even without a body, managed to enjoin Yami Bakura to ally with him once more so the pair of them could destroy their now mutual enemy. The plan failed, and Marik’s personality was nearly killed when Yami Marik had Ra attack them. Marik would survive by sealing his soul in Tea’s body while Yami Marik was thwarted in his attempts to kill Odion by Ishizu. When Noah Kaiba attacked Kaiba’s tournament, Yami Marik took joy in causing mischief and chaos wherever he could until the tournament was back on track. Once in the semi-finals, Yami Marik would duel Joey and end up killing him with Ra(though he nearly lost). Marik would attempt to seize control of his body at this point, but failed in doing so. Yami Marik was then taken to the finals of Battle City against Yami Yugi in which he put up a fierce struggle. However, Odion returned to consciousness and encouraged Marik to fight back against his darker half. With help from Yami Yugi, Marik would overpower and destroy his evil personality and forfeit the duel, making him the runner-up to Battle City. Marik would become an ally of the Pharaoh after learning the truth behind his father’s death, and would be a key role in helping the Pharaoh move on to the next world. Marik is a cunning and bitter person, but he is far from insane. Given rational logic as well as encouragement from his beloved brother, Marik can change his steadfast courses in the blink of an eye. Millennium Rod Marik possesses Bandit Keith’s mind and is able to see through his eyes While Marik fails to establish mental control of Keith again after Yami Bakura breaks it, he is able to communicate with him from long distance nevertheless and cause him a splitting headache Marik controls the mind of one of his Rare Hunters remotely Marik can implant pieces of himself inside of people in order to make controlling them far easier. He then turns his minion into a marionette on strings Mind controlled people retain their memories and can be made to put in codes they know Marik paralyzes Pandora/Arkana and makes him lose the memory of holding a key in his hand. He also reveals the ability to speak telepathically to others Marik brainwashes Joey/Jonouchi into wanting to destroy his best friend. This mind control is later broken through willpower, but it last an impressive amount of time against a guy who has the willpower to stand after being given electro-shock therapy by Yami Marik later While Joey breaks the mind control an instant later, Marik manages to control him long and well enough to force him to throw a lethal blow at Yugi Marik is able to slip into Bakura’s mind without Yami Bakura’s approval due to having implanted his consciousness in Ryo Bakura by touch during an earlier scheme. This allows Marik to have a talk with Yami Bakura in private while Ryo sleeps Even while his body is taken over by Yami Marik and most of his consciousness is sealed away, Marik is still able to tag along in a spiritual form to help Yami Bakura fight his dark half because he had implanted some of his consciousness in Yami Bakura. In essence, this is a back-up file Marik survives being blasted by Ra and having Bakura’s body destroyed by backing up his mind in yet another body, this time Tea’s. He also possesses her body Marik easily knocks out some armed guards with the Millennium Rod Physical Ability The good Marik reveals that he can use the abilities of a possessed body to their fullest by doing a backflip over Yami Marik and dodging him Edited by lazerbem, Oct 23 2016, 08:10 PM.

![]() "What do I want? I have no needs! But if you really want an answer, I want to get rid of all light and order! I want to destroy all lives aside from my own! Destruction is my pleasure! Destruction, that is what gives birth to my world, a world of darkness and death!" Yami Marik, in contrast to the fairly ordered Marik, is a violent and insane personality who delights in both his own pain and that of his opponent’s(though he hates losing and fears it terribly). Yami Marik is arrogant to a fault, and this has cost him several times in duels. However, he is a good enough duelist to assure this usually doesn’t matter. Yami Marik is superior to Marik, so anything Marik can do, assume Yami Marik can do but on par or better. Millennium Rod Yami Marik sets up a Dark Game in which whenever any player loses a card they control or controlled, they lose a memory of a person. In this case, it results in Mai forgetting the existence of Anzu/Tea and being unable to see or hear her despite being right in front of her. He goes on to do this several more times throughout the duel, but I won’t put one for every time. Spoiler: click to toggle Yami Marik’s Millennium Rod lets him see the greatest fears of a person to more effectively mentally torture them Yami Marik’s Dark Game makes holographic shackles turn real along with everything else in a game. Also, changes in game state deal real pain to the players. Indeed, this is the reason that Yami Marik runs a torture themed deck, forcing his opponents to suffer excruciating agonies in his Dark Games to beat them mentally before their lifepoints fall Yami Marik casually paralyzes Joey with his magic Yami Marik blasts Mai with his Millennium Rod and traps her in a mental attack where she will see herself slowly dying while her friends ignore her and play. He then explains it further, that she will lose all of her memories and purpose for existing from his spell. Spoiler: click to toggle Yami Marik seals his other personality away Yami Marik blasts his sister and father against a wall with the Millennium Rod as a child and paralyzes them both Yami Marik is roughly equal to Yami Bakura in terms of magic, so they use a Dark Game to settle things Yami Marik sets up a Dark Game where changes in the game state, such as loss of life points, results in some demonic beast from a dark dimension eating away at the sufferer’s soul and body until they lose, at which point their entire body and soul is absorbed by the darkness. Worth noting that losing body parts doesn’t actually physically hurt, and a player can continue to play even if they are in pieces Yami Marik deflects some lasers with the Millennium Rod and then crushes a pair of robots with his magic Yami Marik goes on the warpath with his Millennium Rod and explodes some metal security doors and then blasts apart many pieces of machinery, causing enough damage to shut down power to an undersea fortress Yami Marik sets up another version of the dissolve into darkness Dark Game, but this time using his alter ego and Yugi Moto as sacrifices. A noteworthy showing in that it shows he can split souls, even strong ones like Yugi’s Close Quarters As a child, Yami Marik catches his father’s whip in his hand and holds it with ease Yami Marik stabs his father to death with the dagger of the Millennium Rod Yami Marik reacts to some lasers coming at him easily Yami Marik feels the pain of being chopped in half but laughs it off Yami Marik feels enough pain to almost vomit involuntarily, but he’s smiling nevertheless at the end of it Yami Marik takes advantage of his alter ego’s sadness in order to snatch the Millennium Rod from his hand before he could react. ![]() "Great beast of the sky, please hear my cry. Transform thyself from orb of light and bring me victory in this fight. Envelop the desert with your glow and cast your rage upon my foe. Unlock your powers from deep within so that together we may win. Appear in this Shadow Game as I call out your name, Winged Dragon of Ra!" Marik has control over the strongest Egyptian God, the Winged Dragon of Ra. Thanks to Marik’s magic as well as the god’s own power, it is far more than just a simple card. This card would later be used by Yami Yugi and so some of Ra’s feats were from that time period. Even counterfeit versions of this card are dangerous if used by the unworthy. Among things that Ra does to people who use counterfeits who aren’t worthy include being struck by lightning, having lightning bring a pillar down on their head, driving them mad, setting them on fire, and choking them Ra hits Yami Yugi in the back with a blast and while Yami Yugi is able to survive it, he’s knocked out and exhausted from doing so. Worth noting that Yami Yugi is able to tank flamethrowers without breaking a sweat with his magic. Also, Yami Marik says Ra would have killed Mai and Jonouchi had Yami not stepped in Yami Marik is able to fuse with Ra in order to strengthen the beast with his own life energies. This can be a weakness, however, as if Ra is destroyed, the portion of life Yami Marik gave to it will die with Ra(unless Yami Marik finds a way to disengage in time) Ra nukes the Dark Game in an instant, and Yami Marik explains that its effect kills the opponent too. In this case, it obliterates Yami Bakura in a way even he wouldn’t have survived if he hadn’t backed up his soul. It also nearly destroys Marik’s soul Ra’s ultimate attack is its God Phoenix form. In this mode, it blasts Joey/Jonouchi hard enough to make an earthquake and then proceeds to incinerate his soul. The process is agonizing, and is noted to be shattering Jonouchi/Joey’s mind. While to Joey/Jonouchi’s credit, he doesn’t die instantly from the attack and indeed remains standing for a little while later, the attack still does end up stopping his breathing and putting him in a near death state. Also worth noting that Joey/Jonouchi remaining standing was more so a showing of incredible willpower than anything, as the force was mostly being applied to his card, he was just feeling the pain and soul burning parts of it. Spoiler: click to toggle Under Yami Yugi, Ra banishes the darkness and brings light Under Yami Yugi, Ra’s God Phoenix rips Diabound in half and sets it ablaze, killing it. Ra also puts his wrath on the Thief King Bakura, killing him by setting him on fire Under Yami Yugi, Ra creates a dust devil by flapping his wings and then sends out a giant beam of light from the sky to sear Zorc and make his flesh smoke Under Yami Yugi, the God Phoenix attack makes a huge tornado of fire as it strikes Zorc, the explosion powerful enough to send people far from the attack flying and make strong winds. You can see the impact crater left behind and that it’s deep enough to bury Zorc entirely too. The attack also has enough punch to daze Zorc for a little while and bring back the sunlight Under Yami Yugi, Ra is strong enough to lift the combined mass of Zorc and Obelisk into the air Under Yami Yugi, Ra shows some fancy flying for a split second in dodging Zorc’s giant AOE attack for a little, though it’s ultimately futile due to the size of it Under Yami Yugi, Ra when combined with Obelisk and Slifer’s attacks is able to overpower and cripple the Great Leviathan, a monster that was strong enough to lift an entire island city from the ocean with its coils. The only reason the beast didn’t die was because it is immortal Edited by lazerbem, Oct 23 2016, 08:47 PM.

Those are hard to put into feats that are a gif, but in terms of dueling ability, his duels are as follows. While possessing Strings, he almost beats Yami Yugi, but Yami Yugi gets him in an infinite loop until he draws out just as Marik was about to win. While possessing Joey, he won the duel against Yugi by life points. However, Yugi threw that duel and wasn't putting in anywhere near his all because of the way Marik had rigged the duel so it was essentially a Saw trap. Not really applicable as a showing of dueling ability. Yami Marik owns Mai in their duel, but it's all because Mai made a mistake. When Mai steals the Winged Dragon of Ra, she tries to summon it instead of attacking Marik for game with her three monsters. Because of this, Marik gets to steal Ra back later and Mai gets owned. Yami Marik was also spamming magic to throw Mai off her game, which makes it a tad rigged in his favor. Still, Yami Marik wins the duel comfortably. Yami Marik vs Yami Bakura has Bakura pulling off a series of really bad decisions in another attempt to use Ra for himself. Yami Bakura helps Yami Marik draw Ra into his hand so that he can steal it and fails to use it because Yami Marik expected it to happen and prepared accordingly. Yami Bakura then just gives up on Ra and tosses it in the grave rather than walling with it(Though to be fair to Yami Bakura, he had no idea of Ra's ability to transfer life points to attack). Yami Bakura also lets Yami Marik psyche him out during this duel. Yami Marik vs Joey has Yami Marik lose by life points, but he wins the duel because Joey dies before he can declare the attack to win the game. However, Yami Marik was toying super hard in this duel and relying solely on causing pain to Joey to make him lose. Yami Marik only just barely wins by pain too, and he vomits after winning. Yami Marik vs Yami Yugi has Yami Yugi holding back for a bit because he doesn't want to kill the good Marik, but in the end, Yami Marik seems to have the edge since Yami Yugi just banished all of his monsters while Yami Marik still has some in his deck(though to be fair, this strategy was only undertaken because Yami Yugi wanted to save the good Marik). Overall, Marik has a 2:1 win/loss record without taking in adverse conditions and 1:2 with duels that he would have lost without magic or threatening people's lives. Marik isn't really the best duelist, but he cheats a lot with his magic or with the set-up of his duels and also relies a lot on the surprise factor of his cards and so wins a fair amount anyway. Yami Bakura even calls him out on it in the subs, saying that Marik is good at dirty tricks but that he doesn't like to win that way. I'd dare say he'd have lost to Yami Bakura and Mai if they had just understood the abilities of Ra and not done something really stupid(Yami Bakura helping Yami Marik to draw it was one of his worst decisions) Edited by lazerbem, Oct 23 2016, 09:17 PM.

In my opinion, Yami Marik is incredibly lethal even without the aid of the Shadow Realm. True, some of his opponents made dumb decisions, but we never truly saw his full power because he toyed with everyone, including Yami Yugi. By the time he realized it was going to take more than silliness to beat Yugi, it was too late. But that's just my opinion. Some think he's a s*** duelist (though they often incorrectly cite the duel with Joey), some think he's middle-of-the-road. Either way, I think he was the best duelist up until the end of the Orichalcos arc, at least. |

You could always download the episodes showcasing his duel abilities, cut the important pieces with some software or website, combine them, and upload them to some site where you can share vids and clips and stuff, like this one: https://mixtape.moe/ Though I suppose that'd be too much work. |

By the same token, two of his more competent opponents weren't going full out either. Yami Bakura was obssessed with stealing Ra for himself and Yami Marik was visibly disappointed when he didn't draw into it. If it weren't for Yami Bakura, he'd not have gotten Ra and he'd likely have lost. Also, Yami Bakura was psyched out and thinking his Destiny Board wouldn't work(even though if he had used it, he'd have won, ironically). Yami Yugi was holding back the whole time to avoid killing the good Marik and destroying Ra was a move orchestrated to save the good Marik too. And the pair of them were also taken by surprise with some of the powers of Ra, had they gotten a second shot without the element of surprise, they'd not have done many things that were as foolish.
How is that one incorrectly cited? Yami Marik vomited at the end of that duel, it wasn't a fun time for him at all. He had to go take a shower after it because he was so freaked out. He was toying in that duel to win via pain, that's true, but even in that respect he almost lost. |

Yami Marik knew Bakura was going to try and take Ra from him like Mai did. Not drawing into Ra wasn't going to drastically reduce his chances of victory. The real crime from this duel was normal Marik not knowing about Ra's special abilities. Yami Yugi was holding back to not recklessly endanger normal Marik's life, but that doesn't mean he wasn't still trying to win. The same can't be said for Yami Marik, who was explicitly said to be stringing Yugi along to do what he wanted for the majority of the duel, prolonging his torture as long as he could. Yugi's chances were anything but promising going into that duel—a measly 20% at best according to Kaiba—and everyone knew it.
I always attributed that to him nearly losing. He didn't think anyone would come that close to beating him, let alone Joey Wheeler. What I mean by what I said is that people cite this duel as a way to diminish Marik's power and/or up Joey's, when that conclusion ignores all the time Marik was toying with Joey and the fact that Joey's chance to win was brought upon by Marik's own underestimation of his opponent. |

Yami Marik did not know that until the moment that Yami Bakura used Dark Designator by his own admission. And like I said, Yami Bakura turning into a greedy jerk is what cost him the duel as well as paranoia over Yami Marik having an answer to Destiny Board(he didn't). And yes, Marik not knowing Ra's abilities is another one that cost him and that's part of what I'm saying. A lot of what Yami Marik does is based purely off of surprise tactics that aren't replicable if the opponent knows them.
Winning would kill good Marik and he hesitates many times because of it. He ends up dueling still, of course, but with the way the heart of the cards works, being unbalanced and shaky can have a huge effect on his abilities to draw a good hand.
Toying is a weakness, but then again, if he knows his opponent isn't a punk then it's not applicable. |
