Arguing that we shouldn't have zoos is an argument that doesn't consider or acknowledge the benefits that zoos provide--mostly conservation and breeding. Without zoos, our extinct/endangered species lists would be much longer. Now that isn't to say that zoos aren't bad, because they certainly can be. I love going to the zoo, but I force myself not to go because the city zoo where I live killed their polar bear by forcing him to live in conditions that a polar bear shouldn't be living in.

My solution is stricter regulations within zoos. Don't buy an animal that your zoo can't adequately provide for 100%. Food isn't the only thing that's important to an animal's survival--you also need the appropriate climate, enough room for the animals to live in happily, toys, and anything else that the animal may require to be happy. Without that, you shouldn't be buying an animal. It should also be outlawed to capture animals and place them in zoos unless their endangerment is high enough; most animals should be bred within the zoos themselves and bought/traded within zoos. I'm not sure what zoo regulations are like today, so these rules might already been in place.
They are there if you want to be a part of the AZA. 90% of the zoos in the USA though aren't accredited, so yeah. There are plenty of less than good zoos, and you should avoid them if you can and only visit ones that have been accredited.

The zoo here isn't the best with animal environments, but I think overall zoos are good for the population.
