Just got back from seeing it. I went in with low expectations and I was very surprised at how well this turned out. The humor worked, the action was good, the characters were good for the most part (and don't let Lazer tell you otherwise!), Rita was actually a threat, the cameo from past Rangers was neat, and the mid-credits scene was a fun lead up to the sequel, which I hear they're planning on six movies total.
Spoiler review will be edited in shortly.
Spoiler: click to toggle OK, trying to get this all out before my memory starts fading.
- OliviaElizabeth Banks was good as Rita. Not amazing, but I believed she was f***ing evil. She legit killed people, including Billy at one point, which I'll get into after this. There was no gray area for her, no redeeming factors. Her backstory is that she used to be one of the Rangers on Zordon's team but she betrayed them for more power, and that's about it. In the prologue, she kills the Yellow Ranger, but supposedly she killed all of them except Zordon (the Red Ranger at the time), who ordered in the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs, I guess? I'm not really clear on that part but I think that's what it was implied to be. She kicks the Rangers' asses at one point, although that was before they knew how to morph, so that was pretty cool. Also, she was f***ing hot, and I never found her that attractive before this.
- Yeah, Billy dies. After Rita whoops them, she ties them to a boat and threatens to kill them one by one until Billy tells her where the Zeo crystal is (which she's after in this). She almost kills Zack, but Billy fesses up. Proving she's not a wimp, she kills Billy anyway and releases the others. They don't even attempt to revive him, which I found kind of weird, and just assume he's completely dead...which he is, but still. They bring him back to the Command Center and plead with Zordon to do something, but he can't. They have a big bonding moment where they say they would give up their lives for each other, and the Morphing Grid activates which is Zordon's one chance at coming back to life (oh yeah, that's a thing in this), and it seems like he's going to do it but instead he brings Billy back, which is a turning point for Jason who previously believed Zordon was only in this to get revived. It was a sweet moment admittedly. Then they're able to morph finally, which is an awesome scene once it's all said and done.
- Like I mentioned, Rita kills people without hesitation or remorse whatsoever. It's PG-13 so you don't see anything, but she kills a cop, a hobo, another cop, a jewelry store employee, and a couple that was at the jewelry store. She causes a lot more deaths when she resurrects Goldar and they tear up Angel Grove looking for the Zeo crystal (which is located under a Krispy Kreme). I didn't think they'd present Rita as evil enough to actually kill people, but it was good to see they did.
- Goldar was a letdown. He's just a melty golden monster thing with no personality or defining characteristics really. Maybe if he's in a future movie they'll give him something to do.
- The Zords were cool, but they were smaller than I thought they'd be. Zordon and Alpha were dicks in this regard because they don't tell the Rangers they can combine into the Megazord. The Rangers are almost killed by Goldar and it's by pure luck that they all fall into the same pit and the Zords magically come together. As the Megazord, they pretty much whoop Goldar's a***, even with Rita fused into him.
- On that note, Rita goes out like a b***. Once Goldar is defeated, she defuses from him and tries to defy the Megazord, but gets slapped into the moon. Literally back-handed into the moon in an almost comical fashion, but it works.
- The Rangers were well done. They felt like they were actually friends at some point after getting together, which helped make them believable. They could've gone into their backstories a bit more, at least in the cases of Trini and Zack, but it's alright. We've got five more movies for that, I guess. I like that they didn't push the romance aspect and let things develop organically.
- Jason David Frank (Tommy) and Amy Jo Johnson (Kimberly) cameo'd at the end after the final battle when everyone was taking pictures of the Megazord. I hope they have bigger roles in the next one.
- Mid-credits scene introduced Tommy. We don't see him since he's absent when his name is called, but I'm sure that's down to them not casting anybody yet.
- Jason felt like a natural leader. Brave, respectful, caring, stuck up for the little guy without expecting anything in return. He didn't ask for the leadership role, flaunt it around, or even claim he was the leader at any point. It didn't feel like "oh well he's the Red Ranger so he's gotta act like it now" either. He simply was. He felt like the original MMPR Jason at times.
- Kimberly was hot in a cute way, and it wasn't used in an overtly sexual way like it could've been.
- Trini was lacking in the character development and backstory, but she still felt like a member of the team who belonged.
- Zack was odd because he seemed like the carefree crazy guy at first, but then after he told the story about his mom those qualities seemed to die down and he blended into the rest of them.
- Billy was the standout of the group, I think. He brought everyone together more than once and kept them together, and was really the glue to the whole movie. When he died, you felt it just like the rest of the group did.
- One thing I wondered was why Rita didn't morph during the final fight. She was morphed in the prologue against Zordon and the original team. And did she not ever have a Zord? Unless it was locked away without ever being explained in the movie, she should've also had a Zord like the rest of the team.

And now you've tempted him into telling them otherwise.
Edit: Yeah, I really liked this one and agree with most of your points, Pyrus.
