I think in some terms religion has inspired some of the most important movements in history, likewise, religion has inspired some of the worst atrocities in history. I am going to start off with an example that goes both ways. The bible was used to justify slavery in the United States before and during the Civil War. It was also used to give grounds for ending slavery as well. It seems contradictory to some, but remember what Rogue said. It isn't the religion that is the problem, but the man that is using it to justify his horrendous deeds. We have thousands of years of history to go back and observe how religion was involved with any war or cruel act. Just recently you see all the attacks happening in the news, and a lot of those guys are using the Quran to justify it. A few people in the world likes to believe that Islam is the only religion out there that justifies horrible acts, but that is far from to truth as you just saw my Bible and slavery example. Okay I can name a bunch of religious thoughts and what people used to justify from them. Scientology and anti-psychiatry is an example. Old school Mormonism and Polygamy is another. What about the Bible and wait a minute, homosexuality? The Bible was used to justify quite a few acts. The Subjugation of Africans, the genocide of Native Americans, and even Child Abuse. Now while there are a lot of problems with the religions, we did talk about how it was used to better the world. So what am I playing at you ask? Well at the end of the day it is up to the person to decide how these texts and thoughts will influence their actions. It isn't the text itself but the way a person acts. A person that wants power or a person that wants to do these bad things will look at the texts. They will decide to then take it at heart and follow it. So basically it is only a part of the reason, not the main one. The reason is human nature itself.
