Or something along the lines of that, I've heard this said in some form or another and I have to say, I find this incredibly hard to believe. Anyone else think this way/thinks differently?

THE reason? Nah. But it definitely can play a role in evil behavior.

It's one of many, some would say.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

Religious extremism is often the reason the world is bad but hardly the only reason on its own. Greed, apathy, and a medley of other petty emotions occur just as often.

And I do mean extremism in ALL religions, not just "the bad ones".

It's one of the dozens of macro-social tools that have allowed humanity to progress to the stage it has now, but which can also cause regression, repression and suffering. It's far from alone in this; it just gets worse press than most right now. In 300 years people will look at the nationalism that erupted after the French Revolution first in Europe and then worldwide with the same condemnation people have now for ancient crusades and jihad.

I think that greed is the main reason. People step on heads to try and get wealthy and then they don't use it enough to help people. Some people want way too much of things and don't like to share. This is why I think we generally have wars and poverty. The rich want to stay rich. And I don't just mean we have wars because rich people are out grabbing land, these days it seems to come from the oppressed masses rebelling against a seemingly corrupt regime. And then of course the cycle begins all over again when the winner becomes corrupted by power.

I can only echo what other people have said in that I don't think there is any one reason the world is 'bad'. I wouldn't even say that religion itself is one of the major causes because that would be taking the blame away from humans as a race. With a lot of the bad things that supposedly come from religion, there's usually a human, or group of humans, at the root of it, manipulating religion for their own gains.

I think the world is 'bad' because humans have a large capacity to be bad. We can commit terrible evils, heinous acts, we divide ourselves into groups and say "f*** your group, my group is better".....lots of things. We can also commit great acts of kindness and unite together in times of need, but the sad fact is that bad things are usually much louder than good.

Religion can't be the reason the world is bad because humans created religion; therefore, it is mankind and their own ignorance that makes the world such a bad place. Religion has caused numerous atrocities over the centuries, but it was mankind that directly brought about those atrocities. There isn't a deity that spawns evil and sadness, and there isn't some magical Bible floating around smiting people. We cause the world to be what it is, whether as individuals or as a collective.

The widespread Protestant executions in the 16th century weren't caused by Catholicism--they were caused by Queen Mary I and her twisted ideals, as well as other Catholics who felt the same. Religion was so deeply ingrained in the people of England that they did horrible things in the name of their God, but they weren't manipulated by a deity; they did those horrible things on their own terms.

I still think that religion is poisonous because it factored into these events occurring (and it factors into atrocities and discrimination today) but it is ultimately the ignorance of mankind that brings about everything bad in the world.

I am a little more optimistic in that regard. I find faith has its uses and it often benevolent enough on its own. However, organised religion that continues long enough can create the mindlessness that often precedes the desire to kill in the name of an apparent god of peace.

At least if you were doing so for Ares or Odin it'd make sense.

But if it wasn't religion being used as an excuse to massacre hundreds of people then it would have been something else instead. Religion just happened to be the most convenient scapegoat for human barbarity.

So convienant that it is still being used, which makes it an issue still.

Religion isn't the reason the world is bad, just religious people. Even when they're being good, they're still bad.

You seem to misunderstand why religion is so awful, and you also misunderstand the mind of most extremists. Yes, there would still be bad people doing bad things if religion never existed, and, yes, there are those that use religion to condone bad things they want to do, but religion has a terrible ability to motivate otherwise good people to do truly awful things, believing fully that it's essentially acceptable, moral, or compassionate - in the millions upon millions. It's exceptionally dangerous in that way.

Even among other ideas or strongly-held beliefs that give people this same sense of their actions being ultimately good, none come close to how pervasive and widespread religion is. The list of senseless and/or cruel things done in the name of "religious goodness" is a very long one, right down to something as seemingly petty as forbidding the use of contraceptives being staggeringly destructive. By revered saints, no less.

It's not the reason bad things happen in the world, absolutely not, but the world would unquestionably be much better without it. I don't care for the implication that we should ignore religion and its harmful effects because "people are bad", when a great many of them do bad because of such "good ideas".

Just to clarify, when you say even when they're being good they're still bad, you mean good in their eyes right? Probably should be obvious just checking
